Linda Jean McGarrity of Atlanta, GA passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Born April 16, 1944 in Dyersburg, TN, to Mr Elston Dixon and Mrs Maxine Dixon. Mrs McGarrity led a life dedicated to education and community service. She began her teaching career as an assistant at a Montessori school in Memphis in 1968. After moving to Atlanta in 1972 she spent many years teaching at Lilburn Elementary. She took night classes and through hard work and dedication she was able to earn her Master’s Degree in Education from Mercer University in 1979 and her Doctorate in Philosophy from Emory University in 1990. After receiving her degrees, she transitioned to professorships in the education departments at both institutions. Beyond her educational pursuits, she was an avid reader and active member in several book clubs. A devoted member of Northside United Methodist Church, she served as a Stephen Minister and was active in a number of Bible Study groups. Mrs McGarrity was also involved in community service as Chairman of the Board of the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House, a board of member at Mt Pisgah Christian School, and volunteered weekly at Hospice Atlanta. Despite suffering a stroke in 2010, she never lost her quick wit and sense of humor. She is survived by her loving husband of forty-nine years, Doug McGarrity, daughter Mrs Stephanie Shepp and husband Mike, son Todd McGarrity and wife, Anna McGarrity, four granddaughters Kasey and Kara Shepp and Megan and Mason McGarrity as well as her sister Ruth Chandler of Birmingham, AL and her husband Jere Chandler. A memorial service will be held at Northside United Methodist Church at 11:00 am with Dr Gil Watson officiating.
