Laura Northen Manos, 64, was called home to be with her Savior on Wednesday, March 20th after a long and difficult struggle with Pancreatic Cancer. She passed peacefully surrounded by family and covered in the prayers of her many friends. She is finally free from suffering and free from pain. May her memory be a blessing to all.
Laura was a remarkable person. She played many roles in her life and excelled at all of them.
First Child
Laura was the first child in the Northen family, and the apple of her father’s eye from that moment on. Her relationship with her parents was one that shaped her life until the end. She is happy to be reunited with her father, Deedee, in heaven.
Loving Sister
Laura was the connector for her siblings. She remained intensely close with each of them and actively supported them in each phase of their lives. Family was the cornerstone of her life.
Child of God
Laura was raised in the faith and accepted Jesus as her savior at an early age. She lived her life in a manner that honored her faith and was an inspiration to others. She was an active participant in women’s bible study all her adult life.
Lifelong Friend
Laura was easy to like and considered everyone she met to be a potential friend. Once you became her friend, you were hooked for life. She has an unbelievable number of friends with whom she has been in constant contact for 40+ years.
Devoted Wife
Laura and Nick were a “love at first sight” phenomenon in their senior year at UNC. God played an enormous role in bringing them together and keeping them connected and grounded for their 42 years of marriage.
Amazing Mom
Laura’s life revolved around her kids. They were her everything and the joy of her life. Her struggles to get pregnant and eventual move to adoption showed her that each child was specifically chosen by God to be hers.
Faithful Servant
Laura had the biblical gift of hospitality. Her love of food and desire to help others meant that she was always the first to offer help and would not take no for an answer. It was her way of glorifying God through her acts of service.
Doting Grandma “Mimi”
Laura loved spending time with her grandkids all of whom live out of town. She would plan her life around trips to see them or their visits to Atlanta. During her illness, their facetime visits were the bright spot in otherwise dreary days.
The last decade and a half of Laura’s life was a series of struggles with her health. During that time, she faced three separate bouts with Cancer and a variety of other ailments. Remarkably, she never complained once about her condition. If you asked her about how she was doing, she would reply “I’m fine”. She knew God had a plan for her life, and she was content to follow HIS plan. Her bravery and faith were both astonishing and inspiring.
The family wants to thank the doctors and nurses at Emory St. Josephs Hospital and the Winship Cancer Center for their loving and attentive care. Specifically, we want to highlight Dr. McGahan, Dr. Kooby, and Dr. Natarajan for their skill and personal devotion to Laura’s treatment. The infusion nurses at Winship are too numerous to mention by name, but they know how much we appreciated their skill and friendship. We felt blessed to be in their care.
Laura is survived by her husband Nick; her children Andy (and wife Hannah), Kate, and Sam; her mother Tinsley; her siblings Bill (and wife Jena), Sarah, and Polly; and her grandkids, Tinsley, Waylon and Lucy. She is preceded in death by her father David (Deedee) and her beloved grandparents on both sides.
After a private burial that morning, a Memorial Service will be held in Laura’s honor at 12 noon on Monday, March 25th at her home church - The Church at the Clearing in Vinings. The address is 155 Paradise Shoals Road, Atlanta, GA 30339, and it works on Google maps.
It is an outdoor venue with a pavilion and chairs. There is adequate parking onsite. It can be windy on the hill so dress accordingly. After an initial greeting period, the service will follow when appropriate.
Because the venue is naturally surrounded by flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in lieu of flowers. Below is a consolidated link to some of the causes that were important to Laura and her family.
It is always a mystery as to why a strong believer is taken from us at such a relatively young age. In Laura’s case, we pray it was to end her suffering and be a shining example to others of a life well lived. Well done my good and faithful servant.
Praise God for his endless Blessings and Mercies.
