MYERS, John Alva Myers, Jr of Atlanta, passed away on July 30, 2016, at Hospice Atlanta, surrounded by his immediate family. John was 82 years old. He was born on February 15, 1934 in Winchester, Tennessee to John Alva Sr and Kathryn Shook Myers and was one of three children. After graduating from Franklin County High School, John left Winchester to attend Georgia Tech, where he was a member of ATO fraternity. When he received his degree from Georgia Tech, he stayed in Atlanta and married his childhood sweetheart, Kathryn Miller Knight, on December 28, 1956. Kathryn passed away in April 1994.
Early in his adult life, after serving in the U.S. Air Force and earning his pilot’s license, John started a career in insurance. Having worked for more than 50 years in the insurance industry, he retired from AIG Aviation as CEO, only to continue consulting for CV Starr until a stroke in 2014.
John loved to shoot sporting clays, play golf and was an active member of Atlanta Athletic Club and Druid Hills Golf Club.
In June 1995, he married Dorothy Cunard. John was a generous and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cunard Myers; his two daughters, Nancy Myers Ellsworth and her husband, Michael Joseph Ellsworth, Patricia Myers Elve and her husband, David John Elve; two grand daughters, all of Atlanta; his sister, Mary Myers Winn of Tampa and many close friends.
The family will hold a visitation on Monday evening, August 1, 6-8 at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill. A memorial service will be held at Mount Paran Church of God on Tuesday, August 2 at 10 am, followed by a burial at Decatur Cemetery. Arrangements by H.M. Patterson & Son, 404-876-1022.
