James Benjamin Cass, Sr., native of Atlanta, Georgia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on November 25, 2018. His celebration of life service will be held Sunday, December 2, at the Hopewell Baptist Church, 15730 Hopewell Road, Alpharetta (Milton), GA. 30004. The family will receive guests at 2:00 p.m. and the memorial will follow at 4:00 p.m. Please join the family in the Fellowship Hall following the funeral service for a celebration reception.
James was born and raised in the Howell Mill Road area of Atlanta. He graduated from Fulton High School and attended GA Tech for a brief time before joining the
U. S. Army where he was a Corporal and a rifle instructor. Afterward, he joined the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). In December of 2017, he was honored at a special reception and was one of the very few members to receive a 70-year members’ pin.
He married Betty Jane Head on June 14, 1949 and was devoted to her until her death on October 22, 2014. Together they raised two children: Paula Denise Cass and James Benjamin “Jimmy” Cass, Jr. who passed away on October 22, 2002.
James and Betty were active in and attended Hopewell Baptist Church in Milton where Betty sang in the choir and James served on the Deacon’s Board.
James was also instrumental in cultivating and growing the South Cobb Lions’ Club in Mableton, GA. and served on its board of officers for many years.
He is survived by his daughter, Denise Cass, granddaughter Megan Denise Moore Haralson, grandson-in-law, Hugh Anderson “Skip” Haralson, great-grandsons, Benjamin Reid Haralson, Noah William Haralson and Ezekiel Wilson Haralson.
Other relatives include: Brother-in-law, William Arvid Head of Lilburn, GA. and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife and son, James was preceded in death by his father, Al Drew Cass, mother, Lera Flake Broughton Cass, sisters: Elma Cass Gilleland and Lila Kathleen Cass Carter.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in James’ memory to Benevolent Fund at Hopewell Church, Alpharetta, GA.
