Mr. George Donald McFarland of Dunwoody, age 83, passed away September 19, 2011. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. McFarland was born in Ellijay, Georgia to Ivy and Stella McFarland. Mr. McFarland earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the Mercer University Southern College of Pharmacy and served as a pharmacist in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. As a pharmacist and eventually as President and Director of Professional and Public Relations with the Reed Drug Company where he worked for 30 years, Mr. McFarland received the Lunsford-Richardson Pharmacy Award and the Mercer University Alumni Association Meritorious Service Award. He served on many professional boards, such as Chairman of The Chain Drug Federation of Georgia; Chairman of The Southern College of Pharmacy Advisory Council; President of the Georgia Pharmaceutical Association; Board of Directors for the Georgia Retail Association; member of the National Association of Chain Drugstores. He also served two terms on the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia, University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of South Carolina, University of Florida, and the Medical College of Georgia. Aside from professional involvement, Mr. McFarland was very involved in his community, serving on the Presidents Council at Mercer University; Board of Directors for the National Coalition to Prevent Shoplifting, and President and Board of Directors for the Georgia Burn Prevention Program, Inc. Mr. McFarland was a member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church where he was also a Sunday School teacher, and a member of Dunwoody Country Club. Mr. McFarland is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce McKee McFarland, daughters, Linda McFarland Hynes, Lisa McFarland Armistead and husband David Colley Armistead III, son, George David McFarland; grandchildren, James McFarland Hynes, Mary Joyce Wareham and Elizabeth Ann Hynes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivy and Stella McFarland; sister, Ella McFarland Baker, and brothers, Dr. John Nelson McFarland and Samuel Perry McFarland. A Memorial Service for Mr. McFarland will be held Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 10AM at Dunwoody United Methodist Church Chapel. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:30-3PM at H.M. Patterson and Son-Oglethorpe Hill. Those who wish to make a donation may do so in Mr. McFarland’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
