CLAUDE BARCLAY BARBEE, III, 87, Died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. The cause of death was cardiovascular disease. He was preceded in death by his parents Claude Barclay Barbee, Jr. and Sarah Louisa Gatling Barbee.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marion Crocker Scully Barbee, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who is so grateful for 54 wonderful years together. He is also survived by his children Sarah Barbee Scott (Tom) of Houston, Texas, Claude Barclay Barbee, IV of Lavonia, Georgia, Arthur S. Barbee of Newnan, Georgia; his grandchildren Catherine Barclay Scott, Ensign Charles Andrew Scott USN, Arthur Gray Barbee, and Mary Margaret Barbee; his sister, Sarah Barbee Hanner of Raleigh, North Carolina; his cousin, Sally Gatling Tomlinson of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister-in-law, Eleanor Foster Scully of Ligonier, Pennsylvania; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Barbee was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, attended the Augusta Military Academy in Virginia, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1949 where he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 until 1956 where he piloted P-51 Mustangs and F-86 Sabre Jets. He was stationed with the 72nd fighter/bomber squadron at the Chambley Air Base in France. He was honorably discharged in 1956 having achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant and returned to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was awarded an MBA in 1957. After a brief stint at Westinghouse, he worked at IBM for 18 years from which he took early retirement in 1980. At that time he joined Church & Gregory where he worked as a financial advisor. Mr. Barbee was a member of the Capital City Club and the Atlanta Phoenix Society. He enjoyed annual trips with his friends fishing in Alaska and hunting in South Dakota and South Georgia, and spending time with family at their cabin at Lake Hartwell.
The Visitation will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son–Spring Hill, 1020 Spring Street, NW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30309 from 6:00 to 8:00PM on Thursday, July 5, 2012. The Burial will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, July 6 at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Road, Sandy Springs, Georgia, 30328. The Memorial Eucharist will be held at the Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30305 at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 6.
