Ben was born in Atlanta, GA on May 26, 1951, the son of Ben and Mona Massengale. He was a lifelong resident of Atlanta and graduated in 1969 from Southwest High School. He met his sweetheart Kathy at age 18, and they married two years later, on June 9, 1973. They were blessed with a daughter, Gwen, and a son, Heath, who passed away at birth. Ben was a devoted and loving husband to Kathy, and they enjoyed the highs and lows of life by each other’s side for 52 years.
A successful businessman, Ben founded and operated Tara Vending which served the Southeast for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed playing golf and was a fixture on the Eagles Landing golf course for many decades.
Above all, Ben was a loving father and was incredibly proud of his daughter, Gwen. He was her biggest cheerleader from grade school to golf to Georgia Tech, Coca-Cola, and running her own consulting business. He could not have been more excited when Gwen and Harding added his two amazing grandsons to the family. He doted on his grandsons and loved watching them grow up and hearing about all of their adventures, especially the most recent achievement of Will running the Peachtree Road Race!
Ben’s memory will live on in all who knew him. He made an indelible impact on everyone he met, entertaining them with a funny story or his quick wit and charm. He was smart and driven, creating a beautiful life for his family. He loved everyone and immediately welcomed them into his family.
Ben is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Kathy Massengale; his daughter Mary Gwendolyn (Gwen) Brannon (Harding); his most adored grandsons William Harding Brannon and Andrew Benjamin Brannon; and his best friend and first cousin Michael Prince (Connie). He was preceded in death by his parents; his newborn son, Benjamin Heath Massengale; and his nephew, Brian Prince.
Ben’s family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at H.M. Patterson and Son - Oglethorpe Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta GA. The memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in Oglethorpe Chapel. The service will be live-streamed on the H.M. Patterson & Son website for those unable to attend.
In lieu of flowers, we would like to honor Ben by asking that you take a moment to create a meaningful memory with your family. After all, family is truly the most important part of life.
