William Victor Crosby MD

William Victor Crosby, MD, 94, well-known Athens physician died Saturday, May 26, 2018. He held a specialty in obstetrics and gynecology and was a founding partner in the practice known as Athens Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Bill, the son of Sarah Black Crosby and Victor A. Crosby, was born on November 7, 1923 in South Bend, Indiana. He spent his formative years in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he developed his superb golf skills alongside his father, a scratch golfer. Bill attended college at Vanderbilt University and the University of Mississippi. He completed his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and took specialty training at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

He met his wife, Helen, while she was in nursing school in Detroit, and they married in 1947. In 1955, following Bill’s service during the Korean War as an army physician at Fort Riley, Kansas, they moved to Athens, Georgia where they raised their four sons, each of whom inherited Bill’s passion for golf. Bill was a member of Athens Country Club and the Athens Flying Club, and a founding board member of Athens Academy. He was most closely affiliated with St. Mary’s Hospital, serving as Chief of Staff.

Although his medical practice kept him busy, he and his wife Helen earned their pilot’s license, and together took numerous trips in their plane to Mexico, the Bahamas, and to medical meetings throughout the United States. He spent his later years cultivating his interests in antiques and fine art, while enjoying the vacation home he and Helen built in Cashiers, North Carolina. Their home in Athens was designed by Harold Wescott, who trained under Frank Lloyd Wright.

Bill is survived by his wife Helen Moberg Crosby, sons Robert Anderson Crosby (Betsy), Craig Stevenson Crosby (Paula), Victor Anderson Crosby, MD (Barbara) and Thomas William Crosby; his grandchildren, Colin (Kalyn), Evan (Liza), Taylor (Natalie), Kate (Steve), Sam, Leigh (Danny), Chandler, Julia, and Alex; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned at First Presbyterian Church, 185 E. Hancock Avenue, Athens, Georgia 30601 at 1 o’clock, p.m., Sunday, June 3, 2018. Reception to follow. Burial will be private.
