She was born on May 10, 1929 in Oconee County, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her mother, Olivia Michael, and her father, Russell Lee Huff, both of Oconee County.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Austin Poole of 16 years, who passed away in 1963; and her second husband, Woodrow W. Short of 35 years who passed away in 2000; son, Stanley Herman Poole; son, Harry Tate Short and his wife, Jeanette Short; and son-in-law, Charles McLure.
Mary is survived by two daughters: Patricia Poole McLure and Rita Short Patton (Bill); grandchildren: Chris Short (Tina), Eric Short (Tonya), John Raymond Moon (Elizabeth), Michelle Moon, John Wesley McLure (Casie), Casey Patton (Sheena), Abby Patton Becker (Jon), Michael Poole (Emily) and Tammy Poole Morrow (Eddie); great-grandchildren: Trey Short (Nicole), Cody Short (Chanley), Haley Short, Spencer Short, Trevor Short, Jordis Short, Tyler Robertson, Morgan Robertson Jones (Brandon), Kirsten Morrow, Brianna Morrow Hall (Braxton), Bryson Morrow, Ellie Poole, Ben Poole, Sarah Poole, Andrew Moon, Aaron Moon (Kristen), Nar Lakhicharran (Lily) and Hunter Lakhicharran; great-great grandchildren: Lawson Moon, Grayson Moon, Nar Lakhicharran II, Nora Lahicharran, Maebre Robertson, Sawyer Short, Aliya Lynn Morrow and Addi Morrow.
Mary graduated from Bogart High School. She worked all her years in Retail Clothing except 11 years at Johnson and Matthew Roofing.
As the wife of Woodrow Short, a Georgia Power Company employee, she along with four other wives of Georgia Power Company employees were the founding members of The Athens Ambassadors. She was very active in this organization, as well as the Citizens of Georgia Power and The Women of Georgia Power, for 30 plus years.
Mary served in the official capacity as Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President and President in both Women of Georgia Power and Ambasadors.
During these years the Ambassadors and Women of Georgia Power held many activities that would donate items or cash to charities, such as making 100 dresses for 100 dolls and donating to The Salvation Army.
Other activities include fashion shows, garage sales, chicken barbecues and ice cream socials for the families of The Power Company employees.
Mary and Woodrow were block captains for their street for many years for neighborhood watch. Mary volunteered at Athens Regional’s Pink Posey for 11 years and The Loran Smith Cancer Center until she was approximately 80 years old. She totaled 2,000 volunteer hours between the two.
She and Woodrow traveled to all 50 states to include Alaska, Hawaii and Canada.
Mary, Pat, Tate and Jeanette also went to Japan and China in 2002. Mary was a member of Hebron Christian Church since 1939.
A gathering of family and friends for Mary will be held Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Hwy., Athens, Georgia 30606. Following the gathering of family and friends will be a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel, 3195 Atlanta Hwy., Athens, Georgia 30606.
Mary will be laid to rest in Evergreen Memorial Park, 3655 Atlanta Hwy., Athens, Georgia 30606.
Pallbearers will be Chris Short, John Moon, Wesley McLure, Casey Patton, Aaron Moon, Michael Poole and Tyler Robertson.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Hebron Christian Church, 2501 Hebron Church Road, Winder, Georgia 30680.
