Mary Anne Hodgson, Athens, died September 3, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospice House after a short illness. Born April 13, 1927 in Demorest, GA to Mary Echols Martin and Howard Bradley “Doc” Martin, she graduated from Tallulah Falls School as valedictorian, from North Georgia Junior College, and in 1948, from the University of Georgia with a journalism degree.
For five years, she worked at Radio Station WRFC in Athens, broadcasting two shows daily and becoming program director.
In 1953, she married Athens widower, the late Paul Hodgson and his four young children who, with their mates survive her: Paul “Peter” (Susan) of Athens; Thomas McEver (Patti) of Atlanta; Joseph McEver (Penny) of Nashville, TN, and Margaret Lee Hodgson Ossa (Marcelo) of Nanaimo BC Canada. Other survivors include ten grandchildren and their spouses: Marcelo Ossa (Natasha) and Nicolas Ossa of Vancouver BC Canada; McCullough Hodgson (Jenny) of Decatur; Alan (Lindsay) of Winston-Salem, NC; Mac Hodgson (Kathleen) of Atlanta; Beverly Conley (Jonathan) and Sam Hodgson of Nashville, TN; Thomas, Jr, Kiley, and Mary Catherine Hodgson of Atlanta; sister, Nancy Hardman Revnes (Michael) of Athens; nephew, Joe Revnes of Atlanta; one aunt, LaTrelle Warren of Cornelia; two uncles, Tim Echols (Alice) of Graniteville, SC; and Bascom Echols (Ruth) of Lula; six great-grandchildren, and many cousins.
Throughout her marriage, she also worked as an advertising consultant and editor. She joined the staff of Heritage Convalescent Center as activities director, creating its auxiliary. Later, representing the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Vestry, she created by-laws for the new Lanier Gardens’ Auxiliary. Following publication of two co-authored needlework books, she wrote and hosted twelve how-to television shows.
Early development of civic groups included Recording for the Blind, the Humane Society, Sandy Creek Nature Center, and the Athens Tree Commission. She held various offices in the Athens Junior Assembly, the Junior Ladies Garden Club, and Rabun Gap Guild. During the Bicentennial, she was one of fifty women named as “Athens Women in History”.
Memorial services will be held 11AM Saturday, September 8th at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
