Mary Margaret Carmichael was born on March 14, 1936, the fifth child and first daughter of Mary Knight and Weyman Liston Carmichael. She was born at home in Morgan County near Madison, Georgia. After her birth, another brother and a sister were added to the family. Margaret died on December 9, 2023, in Monroe, Georgia. She leaves behind two brothers, William and Jim Carmichael, and a sister, Laura Poole.
After graduating from high school, Margaret attended Bob Jones University. She majored in speech and graduated in 1958. Later she went on to receive a master's degree in speech pathology at the University of Georgia.
Margaret worked as a speech therapist in Albany and Decatur, Georgia. Then she was instrumental in starting a speech therapy program in Waycross, Georgia.
Later in life, Margaret decided to pursue a PhD in Speech and achieved this goal at Florida State University. She used this degree to teach speech in several colleges in Georgia.
In her retirement, she enjoyed researching and writing articles for a local Athens newspaper. She also volunteered as a companion with Hospice for a time.
Margaret was a devout Christian all her life and was always involved with a church wherever she lived. She was a gracious person, witty and a good conversationalist and will be missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, December 14, at 11:00 a.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home. Interment will be in Bethany Baptist Church Memorial Cemetery in Madison.
