Andy was born in Macon, GA to Nelda Persall Ray and Robert William Ray Sr. on March 27, 1944. He went to Lanier High School in Macon, GA and graduated in 1963. He graduated from Middle Georgia College and went on to attend the University of Georgia. He joined the Air Force in April 1968 and spent a year in Korea. He worked at Westinghouse Overhead Transformers, (ABB, Cap Gemini, Power Partners) in the IT department for 34 years both before and after his time in the service. He always used to say he worked with them in the early 1960’s when a singular computer took up a whole room. He often could be found helping friends and family set up and maintain their home and personal computers. He helped establish the Classic City Kennel Club during its first few years. He enjoyed playing golf and working with the family horses. You could frequently find him driving his daughter to horse shows or camping with his Boy Scout son on weekends. He enjoyed cooking his specialty recipes and was always on the lookout for new chili recipes.
Andy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Holthaus Ray, his son Lester Andrew (Andy) Ray Jr, of Braselton, GA, his daughter Stacy Ray Denny, of Norcross, GA, his brother Charles Ray of Watkinsville, GA, his sister Kathy Ray Crain of Yorktown, VA and his grandchildren Lester Andrew (Drew) Ray III and Robert William (Will) Ray. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert William Ray Jr.
A family viewing was held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 prior to his cremation. He has asked that his ashes be scattered in the Gulf off his favorite vacation spot.
No memorial donations are necessary but may be made to a charity of your choice if preferred.
The family wishes to extend their thanks and appreciation to his friends and neighbors and the staff of the ICU of Piedmont Athens Regional for all their care and support during and after his illness. We also wish to implore those who have decided not to get the vaccine to please reconsider your decision.
