On Friday, June 29, 2023, Johnnie Edward Johnson, 87, affectionally known as “John”, transitioned peacefully from his earthly residence to his eternal heavenly home with his beloved wife Pamela at his side.
John was born on July 3, 1935, in Comer, GA to the late Irene Wise Johnson and Reverend MC Johnson. He was the sixth of twelve children born from this union.
John was educated in the Madison County School District. In 1953, he enlisted into the United States Navy where he served his country for 16 years followed by 14 years in the Navy Reserves before receiving an honorable discharge in 1984. John later relocated to Chester, PA in 1970 and began his civilian career at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as an Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic for 25 years before retiring.
John met his wife, Pamela Jackson, in 1988 and they married on June 29, 1995. God blessed them to celebrate 28 years of holy matrimony which occurred one day before his transition. He was a loving and devoted husband, making certain that his wife, sons, and daughter were always taken care of and felt loved every day.
At an early age, John made the profession of Christian faith. He was a long-time faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church in Chester, PA until he re-located back to his home state of Georgia and joined Springfield Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.
John wore many titles: devoted husband; loving father and grandfather; loyal friend; and trusted mentor. He was no-nonsense, but compassionate; a “talker” that would always leave you with “food for thought”; and a man serious about money matters, especially when it came to investing and how to “set yourself up” for the future. He was a principled man of integrity and always a man of his word (and held others accountable to that same standard). John will be remembered for his love of sharing his knowledge and wisdom with those who enjoyed his company.
John was especially proud of being a dedicated member of Prince Hall Free & Accepted Masons for the Commonwealth of PA where he served as a long-time member in many capacities: Franklin Lodge #58 (Past Worshipful Master), Charles E. Gordon Consistory #65, and Minaret Temple #174 (Past Potentate). He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 12 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3910.
John was also proud of his “yard” and very meticulous about of it! He would spend hours on his riding mower cutting his acres and not allowing anyone to help him because, “They just can’t do it right.”
He is survived by his best friend and devoted wife Pamela, his children Derrick A. Johnson (Angela) of MD, Shanté D. Johnson (his Princess) of GA, bonus son Daniel T. Jackson of GA; four grandchildren; his siblings Theal Johnson (Sally) of GA; Laurie Johnson of GA; Maxine McLaughlin of MI; Berthine Thomas of GA; Janice Langhorne (Pete) of GA; eight sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
John is preceded in death by his three sisters, three brothers, and bonus son, Shawn C. Jackson.
It will be difficult to imagine our family without our beloved John. However, we thank God for blessing us with his presence for 87 years and leaving us with a lifetime of wonderful memories.
