So sorry to hear of the passing of our friend.  He was always willing to open his beautiful home and gardens to Ladies’ Garden Club members and we all loved him and Charlotte too.  They will be missed by many.  He was truly one of a kind…..

Mrs. Waters was a very favorite teacher of mine. Later my parents became good friends of Charlotte and John. Mrs. Waters taught me in the 7th grade at Hillsman Middle School. I then took a class in Historical Preservation at UGA with Mr. Waters. Wonderful memories. They hosted my engagement party in Athens. Mrs. Waters was also my wedding coordinator. My family and I have had a very special relationship with Mr & Mrs Waters. I am so thankful my family has had them in our lives.  Alana


John and Charlotte Waters were special to me. Charlotte was My Big Sister at Radford college and when my daughter, Alana, kept talking about her favorite teacher--we became united as friends again. So
John came with the friend package and he was such a favorite of mine for his knowledge of gardening and his friendship meant a great deal to me and my husband Edgar and daughter Alana.  
Both of the Waters were interested in the arts for the home and garden.  I am sorry to lose both Charlotte and John and will miss 
them Very Much.

John Waters was a true gentleman and visionary. So many students became significant contributions to the field of Historic Preservation which John formed at UGA. He was a colleague— us early on upon my arrival at UGA in 1988, serving on the North Campus Historic Preservation Committee together for many years before it was disbanded, and he inviting me to serve on several HP theses which I really enjoyed. I always learned so much from him and admired his steadfast commitment to historic preservation .  I hadn’t seen him recently but I remember fondly our past conversations and interactions. What a wonderful man, Professor, and scholar. 

My deepest condolences to his family and all who called him friend.

John Waters was an Athens treasure. I worked with him on many
community project. He cared deeply about Athens and always
tried to protect the historic resources. His gentle manner was 
valuable when faced with differing opinions. It was his skill at
bringing people together that often got the task accomplished.
There is now a gapping place that was occupied by John Waters 
who continually strived to better this community for everyone.

I work at the vet clinic Mr. Waters brought his golden retriever, Beauregard, to. He was always the most kind and polite man I’ve ever met. He was such a joy to be around and I’m grateful to have met him. We shared the love of golden retrievers so we would always talk whenever he came into the clinic and he always had something interesting to say. Everyone at the animal clinic will deeply miss Mr. Waters. 

After we bought our home on John's street, he offered to help us with the design of our lawn and we remained friends with Charlotte and John...both delightful.  We will miss our chats with him.

My husband and I are sad to hear of John's death.  I knew him, not only as a professor in Historic Preservation in Landscape Architecture, but also as a customer at Piccadilly Farm Nursery and Gardens.  After moving back to Athens after many years practicing Landscape Architecture in Savannah, it was nice to become reacquainted with John.  He would drive his big sedan out to the nursery seeking some special plant for his gardens and we would enjoy a pleasant conversation.  He will be missed! 

What a legacy Professor Waters has infused. I had the opportunity to take an HP class as an elective in the late 80's. We made the pilgrimage over to Savannah for a wonderful time. I did not know he was from Natchez; another great town with an abundant history. Condolences to his family.

I will always remember Professor Waters as my biggest cheerleader. He gave me great encouragement when I was doubtful about enrolling in the MHP program too late in life. I don't think I would've done it without his support. He was an inspiration.
I always admired his dedication to the discipline and his vast knowledge of the subject of historic preservation. I think it gave meaning to his whole existence. 
He was great support throughout my thesis project. This project gave us both the opportunity to travel abroad. I'd like to think that I was somehow a contributing factor to an experience that would create memories that would stay with him for the rest of his life.
I know my memories of him and his influence in my life will live on even if he is no longer with us. 

John Waters took my small MHP class to Natches, Mississippi and to Mobile, Alabama to kick off our program way back in 1990 and what a trip it was!  A great way to introduce us to Historic Preservation.   I haven’t seen John in years but would have loved to.   What a guy he was, so dignified. Salt of the earth and Charlotte just as perfect as he.  HP has been my lifelong profession and I love John Waters for that!  He deserves a bronze plaque on Denmark Hall!

Much of my sense of wonder and knowing the duty of being a steward of things past - for those in the future - is something I solely owe to John Waters.  I would not be where I am now if John Waters had not gifted upon me an act of kindess and let this less-than-stellar student into his program, well after the application deadline.  The world is less without him in it. 

John Waters was a teacher, a passionate leader, a willing mentor and an ever present example of a good and kind man. He had the ability to make you feel like the only one, in a room full of many. Without his courage to take a gamble on a mediocre undergraduate, I would not be on a life path executing the exact historic preservation ethics he introduced me to. Thank you John Waters for opening my eyes, mind and spirit to the noble field of historic preservation.

Thank you Professor Waters for opening my eyes and sharing your knowledge. I use what I learned from you every day. 

So sad to hear of John's sudden passing. He was my senior thesis professor and we spent many days in Dahlonega during the study and following my graduation when they were implementing our recommendations. Also, fond memories of the Smith House during this time. When my wife and I were planning our trip in 1971 in our VW bus, John was keen to give advice about the Los Angeles area from his days working in the area. Although I haven't talked with him much since that time, I have fond memories of our time together.

John was my major professor, mentor, and friend.  He will be missed.



Professor Waters was the kindest person. He encouraged a 40 something woman to give grad school a chance and much later to finally finish her thesis. He was a great educator and cheerleader for so many of us.

I am so sorry to hear of Professor Waters passing. He was such a great professor and kind soul. One of my favorites in historic preservation. He took our class to Savannah in 2007 and what a wonderful time it was. I will always remember him fondly. 

Sending prayers to his family. I know y’all will miss him dearly. He was certainly a gem. 

I know you will find a special place in Heaven to preserve for eternity.

I will miss you my dear friend and mentor.
