James Wilson "Jim" Smith

Born in Cobb County, Jim was the son of the late James L. Smith and Mary M. Tucker Smith. He studied Music at Wheaton College, where he served as Sergeant and student director of the ROTC band and earned his private pilot’s license. He later completed his degree in History and obtained his Juris Doctor from The University of Georgia, graduating Cum Laude and becoming a member of the Demosthenian Society. In Athens and the surrounding areas, Jim distinguished himself as a top attorney, often forming lasting friendships with his clients and their families. This past March, the State Bar of Georgia honored him for 50 years of dedicated service. A private pilot, he flew his single-engine Cessna far and wide, from the Bahamas to South America, always bringing along others to share in the adventure. He also hosted countless exchange students, many of whom consider him a profoundly influential figure in their lives and think of him fondly to this day. An avid Georgia Bulldog fan, Jim held season tickets for many decades and rarely missed a football game, whether at home or on the road. He also rarely missed a Sunday in the balcony at First Presbyterian Church of Athens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Elaine Howard Smith; his daughter, Hannah More Smith; a brother, John Smith; and a sister, Mary Smith.

He is survived by his daughter, Caroline Smith, of Atlanta.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 23, at 2:00 p.m., at Oconee Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Ryan Baer officiating.
