James (Jim) David Carter was born on October 2, 1946 to Paul and Cleo Carter of New London, North Carolina. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Phillip and Chris. He is survived by a son, Vincent (Kristen) Carter of Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Lillian and Elisha also of Oklahoma; a former spouse, Judy Carter of Athens; a brother Richard (Jane) Carter of N.C.; a nephew, Bryon Carter and a great-niece, Cleo from N.C.; plus numerous cousins and friends.
His early schooling was in N.C. However, he chose the University of Georgia to earn multiple degrees in the field of education. He spent over thirty years providing students in N.C. and Georgia encouragement through his love of learning. He ended his career in Oglethorpe County Schools as a Special Education Director.
His first love was his family followed by his friends. He loved going for long walks on which he was known for waiving or saying hello to many people along the way. He enjoyed meeting new people and was always happy to engage in a conversation. He contributed to a diverse variety of charitable organizations. Following family came his love of antiques, historic structures, and history. He always liked to tell about his “finds” and the “hunt” for them. He had a passion for the history of each piece. He saw value in every item.
He restored or helped restore several houses in Athens and the surrounding area. The ones most noted in Athens are on Hill Street and the Presbyterian Manse on Hull Street. Prior to moving to Watkinsville, his last restoration, he lived in an antebellum house he restored in Philomath.
