Helen was born on February 2, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to parents Ernest Gustav Moberg and Ruth Gladys Stevenson Moberg. Orphaned at an early age, she was raised by her beloved aunt Elizabeth Stevenson Beach, first in the Pittsburgh suburb of Glenshaw, and later in Adrian, Michigan near Detroit. She graduated from the Harper Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 and served as a registered nurse. In 1947, she married her husband Bill, a native of Royal Oak, Michigan, who she met when he was a young medical student.
In 1955, the couple settled in Athens, Georgia, where Bill opened a practice in obstetrics and gynecology and where they raised their four sons. In the late 1950s, they purchased a plane and began flying, and in 1960 were charter members of the Athens Flying Club at Ben Epps Field. Helen became an officer of the Georgia Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots, and enjoyed ferrying her boys to junior golf tournaments, taking her friends on shopping trips to Atlanta, and serving as her husband’s co-pilot on flights to their sons’ boarding schools and on vacations in the United States, Mexico and the Bahamas.
Helen was an active volunteer for the Athens community. A devoted member of the Junior Assembly, she participated in and spearheaded many of its fundraising efforts, serving both as its president and as president of its Sustainers group. She was an avid gardener and member of the Heritage Garden Club and belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Athens where she taught Sunday school and served as a substitute pianist.
A kind, cultured, and beautiful lady, Helen was known among her friends and family for her passion for, and appreciation of, literature, music and the fine arts. She is survived by sons: Robert Anderson Crosby (Betsy), Craig Stevenson Crosby (Paula), Victor Anderson Crosby, MD (Barbara), and Thomas William Crosby; nine grandchildren: Colin (Kalyn), Evan (Liza), Taylor (Natalie), Kate (Steve), Sam (Mehves), Leigh (Danny), Chandler (Cliff), Julia and Alex; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
The family is especially appreciative of the loving care and friendship of her loyal caretaker Sylvia Lowe, and of the many members of the dedicated staff at Quiet Oaks Health Care Center.
A graveside service for family only will be held at a future date.
Memorial donations in honor of Helen may be sent to the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., 2450 S. Milledge Avenue, Athens, GA 30605.
