I am so saddened to hear of Mr. Wooten’s passing. He taught me German all four years of high school, and I went on to major in German and study in Tuebingen for a year. More recently I would cross paths with him at Wesley Woods, where my mother and his mother both resided, and I took pleasure in catching up a bit as adults, and as a fellow teacher myself. It strikes me now that even when we were teenagers, he would pretty much treat us as adults—never sanitizing his ribald humor and his stories of living in Germany, nor pulling punches regarding his opinions on things. That was rare in a teacher, and I appreciate that about him, looking back. I will miss him. May his memory be a blessing for each of you, for all of us.

Charlie was one of my favorite teachers in high school. He was entertaining and so funny, and I always knew he cared. I had the trip of a lifetime thanks to the German exchange program he pioneered. He was also my best friend’s dad, and I always felt welcome at his home. I have countless memories around their dinner table sharing a home cooked meal, eating German chocolate, enjoying birthday parties, watching a game together, climbing trees, or playing Army in the yard.

My deepest condolences are with Hilde, John, and Brian as they mourn this tremendous loss. 

Mr Wooten was definitely one of a kind ! 
What a great teacher! Such a charismatic person. Very witty (and sometimes dry) sense of humor, could always be good for a laugh or two. He will be missed greatly!

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Woolen’s passing. I was in his freshman home room at CCHS in 1977-1978. He was so funny and energetic. When we were signing up for sophomore year, I had planned to take Spanish, but he pulled me aside and asked me to take German. I decided to, based on the fact that he seemed to be a good teacher and I liked him. 

That decision made my life what it is today. Though I had to change schools in the middle of my junior year, I remembered how much I loved German class and went on to major in foreign language education at UGA with my focus on German. I went on to get my masters at Georgia and studied for a year in Freiburg, Germany. I taught for several years at Redan High School in Stone Mountain as well and all because Mr. Wooten thought I’d do well in his class.

The world is a little less bright without the thought of him in it. I’m sending a wish for peace and strength to his family and all who knew him.

A man of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. To his many colleagues in low spirits, he hath borne us upon his back a thousand times with stories and good spirits. Knowing German as well as Goethe knew it, he was an excellent German teacher. Moreover, whenever he was needed to teach out-of-field, he gladly to an English or history class and taught it competently.

We bid sympathy to  his wife Hilda. And to his sons, John and Bryan,  and their families/significant others.

Charlie Wooten--a good man gone. We do not miss him. Rather, we remember him.

     My memory of Chuck Wooten dates back to the early 1960’s! We were classmates /friends at Williamson High School!
      His mother, Mildred Wooten was a teacher in the Home Economics Department!
     Our Senior Year was 1965-1966 and I remember our friendship through that particular year! Our classmates were close and those school years bring great memories! 
     After all the years since our graduation… I still have the fondest memories of Chuck; playing football; being a very studious student; and he was a good friend!

My sincere condolences to your family. Mr. Wooten was such an amazing teacher and an even better person. His love for Germany and her language was not lost on me. His wicked sense of humor helped me limp my way toward a passing grade! He was definitely generous in that regard! I often thought of him and will continue to do so, with nothing but fond memories. 

Mr. Charlie, was the sweetest man, I met him at Lanier Gardens, when he came to visit his mother, Ms. Mildred. He was such a sweet son to her. I loved reading the memorials from all of the students he taught over the years, and his friends. My deepest sympathy to all the family. I know you will miss him. 🙏

I’m sorry to learn about your dad. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Wooten was one of my all-time favorite teachers, bar none. He was wry, funny, kind, and supported and advocated for me throughout my high school years. He kept up with me after high school and college, and he was always good for a crazy tale and a laugh. I still tell others the stories he told us about his time in Berlin, and I will never forget the things he taught us. Rest in peace. ￼

Mr. Wooten was my favorite teacher at CCHS. If I was ever having a bad day, his door was always open to me. I spent many a lunch periods in his classroom just talking and laughing about random things. He kept his students laughing and always made them feel valued. 

To the Wooten family, I am sorry for your loss. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. He was a great man and will truly be missed by many people in the Athens community. 

When we first came to Athens as newlyweds in the 1970s both Jim and I were in school. I first met Charlie in a Cross-Cultural Understanding class taught by Dr. Morain.  His wife Hilde came to class to give a talk on her German heritage. That day we found out they lived in the same building.

Our friendship lasted for many years. When Charlie graduated, he started his career at Clarke Central and I went on to get a second major in Media and Librarianship. When I graduated he wrote a recommendation for me and he became my colleague. 

My husband, Jim and Charlie became good friends. They shared an interest in sports, so they attended sporting events here in Athens and in Atlanta. All of us spent time together at birthdays, Christenings, weddings, and whenever Hilde’s family visited, we got to know them too. We watched as our children grew up, and we’re with Charlie and Hilde when they welcomed Brian home from his military service.
He was a well-loved and respected teacher and a skilled craftsman in wood. After retirement, he continued to teach at the college level.
We will always have a special place in our hearts for Charlie and his family. We are thankful for having met him and for all the lives 

It is with deep sadness that we offer our condolences to Hilde, Jon, Brian and family. We will always remember Charlie as our first friend in Athens when we came here to study at the University of Georgia. We will treasure the memories of time spent together in his home and with his family and friends.

Mr. Wooten was one of my favorite high school teachers; I have only fond memories of Mr. Wooten and German class. He made moving from a different country and adjusting to a new environment so much easier. It was always great to walk into German class and be treated with a smile and so much kindness. I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Wooten's passing. He was a force! Funny, full of life, and colorful, with all kinds of crazy stories about his time in Germany that made me want to visit that country. I made several good friends in his German class, some of whom I'm still in touch with. It was first thing in the day, and he used to bring us coffee and donuts. I'd then be on a sugar and caffeine high for the rest of the morning.  A lynchpin of my high school days. Terrific guy.

Herr Wooten had a fantastic sense of humor and was by far one of my favorite teachers of all time. My condolences to family and friends.  I met him in 1982 at Clarke Central. May friends and family feel comfort from God during this time.

In 1981 Charlie started an exchange program for his students. We spent 3 weeks in Rodenkirchen just outside is Koln. I’m  indebted to him for the relationship that I have with the family I met. Over the past 40 years we have maintained our friendship and contacts . We were able to host Charlie and Hilda and the parents of my German family for a dinner in Athens back in 1994. He made such an impact in my life and in the life of my family. Ever indebted. Rest in peace Charlie. You made such a difference. 

On behalf of the Clarke Central Class of 2004, we express our deepest condolences to the family during this time. Mr. Wooten was an exceptional teacher who really cared, and he was such a positive role model for so many of us. Thank you as a family for sharing him with us. Thank you for the late nights of him grading projects and tests, staying after school, and attending school functions, because we know that was time spent away from home, but that was just how passionate he was. We will never forget Mr. Wooten, and the positive influence he had on our lives. Heaven has truly gained one of the best role models Clarke Central High School had. He cared and it was so greatly appreciated. May God bless you,  and we pray for peace and comfort for the family. When times get hard, let the memories of his great work down here, and the lives he impacted keep you pushing, for you will see him again.

Mr. Wooten was my favorite, most influential, teacher I was graced with as a young man. So many times the years,  I've met from Clarke Central graduates that had an awesome Wooten story that helped form them as individuals and adults. I sometimes have to hold back form calling a teammate at work a "Squid Brain", I guess I took that from my German classes in high school!

For the family,  Athens lost an absolute legend on Sunday and I thank you for sharing Charlie with us. He positively influenced so may young Athenians lives over the years and I loved him for all he did for me.

Wooten was by far my favorite teacher at CCHS. I could talk about his class for days. I have such fond memories of him and he touched a lot of people’s lives. Prayers to his family and friends. 

Mr. Wooten was a one of a kind teacher.  I have some of the best memories being with friends in his classroom during lunch.  I never took a class from him but all were welcome.  He knew all of his students and their friends by name.  I know so many who were changed for the better.  My thoughts are with everyone especially his family during this time.
