Our sweet Mother, Marie Baron (nee Bohn) passed away peacefully July 27, 2021, in the Assiniboia Union Hospital Integrated Facility at the age of 93. Mom was born November 6, 1927 in Baden, Russia near Odessa in the Ukraine. Her parents Martin and Angelina, brother Michael and Mom as a baby immigrated to Canada in April, 1928, settling first in Allan, Saskatchewan. In 1929, her father applied for a homestead in Archerwill, Saskatchewan and the family moved to begin making a home. The family grew to include three brothers and five sisters. As the oldest sister, Mom was responsible for helping her mother with the care and raising of her younger brothers and sisters. Because of this, all her siblings held her in the highest regard and had a great deal of affection for her.
After completing Grade 9, Mom trained to be an egg candler. She did this for four years in various towns in Saskatchewan including Quill Lake, Saskatchewan. It was there that she met her future husband Otto and they were married in 1950. They were married for 63 years and had four children, David, Carol, Wayne and Mark.
Mom was an active member of Wesley United Church in Quill Lake where she sang in the choir and was a CGIT leader. Mom’s faith was a very important part of her life even to her final hours. Her time was spent caring for her children, gardening and canning for the winter.
In 1965, the family moved to a farm near Palmer, Saskatchewan. At first, establishing the farm was hard but they endured to establish a home for their children and to make sure they graduated high school and go on to have a secondary education which was very important to Mom. She enjoyed the local dances, square dancing, belonging to the Community Club and UCW as well as playing cards with the neighbours.
Mom spent her last years in Assiniboia becoming a part of the community and a member of St Paul’s United Church. She was self-educated, loved to read and learn. When Mom had the opportunity, she travelled with her sisters to the place she was born and to visit relatives in Germany. She was a royalist and travelled with Carol and Louis to visit London and Buckingham Palace. She travelled to see Eastern Canada with David and Sandra and made many trips to Western Canada and the Western United States with Otto, never missing a chance to learn as much as she could.
Mom is survived by her four children: David (Sandra) Baron of Yorkton, Carol (Louis) Martel of Saskatoon, Wayne (Cindy) Baron of Palmer, and Mark Baron of Medicine Hat. She has six grandchildren; Christopher (Erica), Jesse (Candace), Brittany (Mike), Michelle (Konrad), Aubrey (Brett) and Austin and nine great-grandchildren; Liam, Eddie, Jill, Jacob, Helena, Eli, Ethan, Jude and Teddy. Mom took great pride in all their accomplishments and was in the front row of their concerts, recitals, plays and games.
Mom was predeceased by husband Otto in 2014.
