CHRISTINE (WROLSON) MERRIEN
On May 18, 2024 Christine Merrien passed away at age 91. Christine was born to Gustav and Anne Wrolson on January 1, 1933. She was raised along with her three siblings Synnova, Martin, and Eleanor on the family farm north of Coronach. She attended Hart School until Grade 8, then took Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 at Lutheran Bible Institute at Outlook, Saskatchewan and graduated in 1952. She attended Teachers College in Moose Jaw, then after, taught at Clydesdale School. She met Bernard Merrien at the Ernie Giraudier ranch where she was working for the summer. They were married October 15, 1954. They settled on the farm three miles west of Harptree. They welcomed a daughter, Wanda, in 1955. Then in 1956 their son Kevin was born. Later in life they were blessed with five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Life on the farm was busy. Christine always had a large vegetable garden and loved her flower garden. She could run a tractor for baling and drive the combine and truck at harvest. She taught school at Harptree from 1964 to 1966, when the school closed. She was very active in the community belonging to the Harptree Homemakers Club for many years. The ladies made many quilts for birthdays and numerous anniversaries. Christine was a very good seamstress, sewing dresses for young Wanda and even making matching dresses for Nicole and Aletta when they were playing piano duets at the music festival. She sewed beautiful dresses for them when they were bridesmaids. She had also crocheted and knitted many an afghan. Everyone loved her baking such as cinnamon buns, raised donuts she’d make for their round-up, and especially her maple walnut chiffon cake. The grandkids loved her jam jams. Anytime company came, coffee was made and baking brought out. She was an avid football fan, watching the Saskatchewan Roughrider games on TV. She loved to curl, entering lots of bonspiels in Bengough, Willow Bunch, and Coronach every spring. Bernard and Christine loved to go to rodeos. They were very involved with their children and grandchildrens’ lives, attending piano recitals; first Wanda, then later listening to Nicole and Aletta compete at music festivals. Christine would be there to watch the grandkids at field day, hockey games, team roping, and attended their graduations, then weddings. Christine suffered loss when her mother and father passed away, then losing their daughter-in-law Lori, as well as her sister Eleanor and husband Don Kupper, her brother Martin and his wife Eileen, brothers-in-law John Paterson and Doug Colvin and nephew Raymond Campbell. Her husband Bernard passed away April 20, 2016. She is survived by daughter Wanda (Hewitt) Pulfer, son Kevin Merrien (Linda Bruneau), sister Synnova Colvin, sister-in-law Jacqueline Paterson, five grandchildren: Lee (Jen) Merrien, Nicole (Dusty) Shaver, Lance (Kaila) Merrien, Marlon Pulfer (Leah Proulx), Aletta (Dean) Maier; nine great-grandchildren: Houston, Ciera, Holden, Halle, Hanna, Braylan, Ethan, Drew and Claire, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Christine stayed on the farm until October 2017 when she went to live at the Prairie Villa in Assiniboia. In March 2020 she moved to the Grasslands Health Centre in Rockglen, transferring to the Coronach Health Centre September 2020. She resided there until she passed away May 18, 2024.
