Mary Ellen Johnson

Born on July 18, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, Mary was the cherished daughter of Eleanor (Hammel) Ayres and John T. Ayres. She spent her childhood in St. Louis, graduating from Bishop DuBourg High School before earning her bachelor’s degree from Saint Louis University. A passionate learner with a heart for children, Mary found her calling as an elementary school teacher, dedicating her career to second and third graders in St. Louis, Missouri, and Spring, Texas.

Mary’s life was enriched by her deep love of history and learning. She was an avid reader with a special interest in Egyptian antiquity and the stories of English and French aristocracy. Her curiosity also led her to explore genealogy, joyfully uncovering the lives and legacies of her ancestors.

Above all, Mary was devoted to her family. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Keith Johnson, and his wife, Christina, of Arnold, Missouri, and their children, Nicholas, Marissa, Will, and Ava; her daughter, Stephanie Cappadona, and her husband, Jack, of Boston, Massachusetts, and their son, Jake. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia and her husband Kent Evans of Georgia.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Fonnie Johnson, as well as her parents, Eleanor (Hammel) and John T. Ayres.

Those who knew Mary will remember her selfless spirit, her twinkling blue eyes and stunning smile which radiated warmth and joy . In her later years, she cherished the companionship of her work out and walking group and the dear friendships formed through lunches and shopping trips. Every Christmas, her famous chocolate chip cookies were a treasured gift, fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to enjoy them.

A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Faith Lutheran Church, 6101 Telegraph Road, Oakville, Missouri.

Though Mary no longer walks beside us, her legacy of love, kindness, curiosity and memories of her warm smile will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
