Died peacefully in his home January 8th after a long illness, surrounded by family and close friends. Born in Glens Falls NY, he is a graduate of St. Michael's College in VT, Georgetown Law School and GW University. After his studies he joined the USMC and rose to the rank of Colonel in the USMC Reserves. He began his Civil Service at the National Labor Relations Board and in 1960 became an Asst. US Attorney for the DC Court of General Session. In 1966 was appointed by Lyndon Johnson as a Federal Judge for the Court where he served for nearly 40 years. Tim taught at many university law schools, including Georgetown, American, and Catholic, as well as Potomac Law and The National Judicial College. In 1985 he took Senior Judge status and joined the Executive Office of the US Attorney where he served over the years as Special Assistant to the Attorney General, Deputy Associate Attorney General and Associate Deputy Attorney General. He returned to the DC Superior Court where he served as a Senior Judge until his illness forced him to retire.He was an active member of the Order of Malta and the Knights of Columbus, as well as many other professional & civic associations.
Judge Murphy is survived by his wife Barbara of 51 yrs, daughter Kathleen Sweeney (Greg); sons Brian (Debbi Vande Woude); Timothy (Katherine Carothers) and Christopher; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren, sisters Pauline Sullivan and Anne Yankoupe. and 16 nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Mary Murphy and granddaughter Regina Sweeney. For years Tim was lovingly cared for by Pedro Tacluyan, Erwin llao, Teddy Gonzales and Capital Caring Hospice.
A wake will be held in the family home (4033 N.40th St Arlington, Va 22207) on Jan 16 from 5 to 8 pm and a Mass of Christian burial at St. Agnes Church (1910 N. Randolph St. Arlington Va 22207) Jan 17 at 11:00 am. Burial will occur at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Capital Caring (950 Glebe Rd Arlington, VA 22203) or The Order of Malta Lourdes Fund (1730 M st. NW Suite 403, Wash. DC 20036).
