Thomas Frederick Fisher, age 79, passed away on May 16, 2023, in Arlington, Virginia. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cherished friend to many. He is preceded in death by his wife Alicia Rae Fisher, mother Marie Fisher, father Carroll Fisher, and brother Joseph Fisher.
Tom will be fondly remembered by so many for his endearing charm, his undeniable wit and humor, and his devotion to his family - especially his wife Alicia whom he lovingly cared for until her passing in 2008.
He met his wife Alicia, in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 1966. They were married for 42 years and resided in Arlington, Virginia where they raised their three children. He enjoyed spending time with his family at their beach home in Bethany Beach, Delaware. He loved socializing with his friends, tailgating at Washington football games and tinkering on his various home and garden projects.
He was born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland. The middle son of Carroll and Marie Fisher, he graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School before attending American University where he majored in business management.
Tom spent his career with the U.S. Coast Guard. As Deputy Director of Personnel Management, he was responsible for managing the service-wide military and civilian personnel programs. In 1987, he was appointed to the Senior Executive Service and retired in 2005 after 35 years of service. He received the Silver Medal for Meritorious Achievement from the Secretary of Transportation and the Distinguished Career Service Award upon his retirement. He was also Honorary Master Chief Petty Officer and Honorary Chief Warrant Officer in the Coast Guard.
Tom is survived by his three children; Meredith Marie Marshall, John Carroll Fisher, and Amanda Rae Fisher; his daughter-in-law Jean Fisher; his three grandchildren, Jake Marshall, Madeline Marshall and John Fisher Jr, his brother Bob Fisher and four sisters-in-law, Louise Fisher, Elisa Fisher, Marcella Garland, and Sharon Garland.
Visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA on Wednesday, May 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral will take place on Thursday, May 25 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace, 2700 So. 19th St., Arlington, VA 22204 with interment and reception to immediately follow at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, VA 22201.
