On Friday June 30th my loving husband Steve passed away at the age of 76 at the Adler Center for Caring in Aldie, VA. Steve was born November 26, 1946 in Independence, MO and spent his childhood in Shawnee Mission, KS. In 1967 he volunteered to go to Vietnam joining the Marines for two tours. Shortly after returning home, he married the love of his life, Diane in Lawrence, KS. He was predeceased by his parents Max C. and Ruth H. Opperman as well as his brother Max Opperman. Left to mourn his death are his wife of 50 years, Diane, children Georgia Ouren (Bill), Brian Opperman (Tanya),sister-in-law Maggie Opperman, and grandson Brady Opperman. Steve was a hard worker all his life from delivering papers as a child to working construction at Interlock Steelworkers until he retired in 2011. He so enjoyed the brotherhood he formed there at the company. Steve loved retirement and took great pleasure in the simple but meaningful things life had to offer; a walk with his dog to the coffee shop, engaging in conversation with friends, sitting on the porch with a good book, and last but not least, spending time with family, especially Brady, whom he cherished. From the day he was born Steve babysat Brady until he started school and they had wonderful adventures together. In 2017 he bought 5 acres of land in Central VA and started a tree farm. He built a little house on the land and loved spending time there. Steve will be greatly missed by all who knew him and those who didn't but remembered him as the man walking with his dog everyday. A kind man, a gentle soul, and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Interment will be in Yates Center, KS at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation (arborday.org) or the Adler Center for Caring. (capitalcaring.org/adlerlegacyfund)
