Murphy Funeral Homes
On Tuesday January 8, 2019 Ross Thaxter of Arlington, VA died suddenly. Ross was born in Mexico, ME on September 28, 1935. He grew up in Orono, Maine, and was a proud alumnus of the University of Maine class of 1957, majoring in History. After graduation he joined the Navy serving as a Lieutenant for 10 years. He served in the Vietnam War, during which time he served on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk.
Among his many commendations, he was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery in service. He later worked as a Naval Analyst as well as for the Department of Education. After retiring he pursued his passion for reading, gardening, opera and history. He loved art and art galleries. He delighted in the birds in the yard and the progress of the garden. He tended to the garden and his friendships with care and respect. His wonderful laugh and dry sense of humor were enjoyed by all who knew him.
Ross is predeceased by his parents, Esther Murch and Maynard Thaxter; 4 older siblings, Ted, Patricia, Bruce and Gwendolyn Smallwood as well as his lifetime partner, Herschel Burleson. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Thaxter, numerous nieces, nephews and many close friends.
As a true Mainer, his love for the Maine coast shines through. His wish was for his remains to be cremated and scattered off the coast of ME. There will be a private service at a later date. Any memorial contributions may be made to the Maynard Ross Thaxter Scholarship Fund, University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place Orono, ME 04469
