Dr. Martin Lawrence Stoker

Dr. Martin Lawrence Stoker, affectionately known as Marty, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on November 15th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and profession. Marty, born on January 11, 1926, in Norton, Virginia, was the beloved son of Gardner Mark Stoker and Mary Francis Boucher. He grew up in Philadelphia and Beaverdale, Pennsylvania alongside his 14 siblings- Gertrude, Irvin, Norman, Gardner II, Martha, Sarah, Margery, John, Katherine, Helen, Elizabeth, Gardner III, Gawen, and Barbara. Here they shared their joint efforts of contributing to the family farm while growing up. Marty’s adventurous spirit was evident from an early age; he joined the United States Navy at 17 and flew a torpedo bomber (The TBM Avenger), showcasing his bravery and commitment to service. He held a pilot's license before he even had a driver's license- a testament to his passion for aviation. After his military service, Marty took advantage of the GI Bill to pursue his education, attending Villanova University and later earning his medical degree at Temple University. At the age of 28, he moved to Arlington, Virginia, where he began a remarkable career as a general practitioner. Dr. Stoker met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Tyndall, while completing his residency at DC General Hospital, and they married a few years later on October 3, 1959, celebrating their honeymoon in beautiful Sea Island, Georgia. Together, they raised six wonderful children: Mary Helen (Bill) Eash, John Martin, Brian Lawrence (Judy), Robert Christopher (Michelle), Thomas Tyndall, and James Patrick (Yvette). His legacy continues with his cherished grandchildren: Jacqueline Marie (Jason), James Wesley, Samuel Martin (Hannah), Jacob Lawrence (Lauren), Henry Tyndall, Margaret Tyndall, Laine Tyndall, Charles Thomas, Adelle Osborne, and Avery Anna Grace. He was also the great-grandfather to Jameson, Jack, and Evangelina. Dr. Stoker was not only an accomplished physician but also a beloved member of his community. He was elected President of the Arlington Cancer Society and gave medical lectures at Georgetown University, further demonstrating his commitment to both his profession and the community. He dedicated himself to his patients, making house calls and ensuring that everyone received the care they needed. Marty’s passion for education was evident in everything he did, as he encouraged his family to pursue their dreams and aspirations. He was admired for his intelligence and storytelling ability, able to recall the details of his acquaintances and his life stories, well into his later years. Known for his sharp wit and humorous stories, he often entertained family and friends with his favorite movie quotes and clever jokes. After practicing medicine for 40+ years, Marty spent his retirement enjoying several hobbies including: skiing, reading, woodworking, and golfing at Washington Golf and Country Club. He cherished the moments spent dining at restaurants with his family, always eager to share a dessert, particularly if it involved chocolate! An avid woodworker, he crafted furniture for his home and his kids, finding great joy in the creative process. He also tended to his yard and appreciated the beauty of nature, often reflecting on his time out West. Dr. Martin Lawrence Stoker will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his generosity, humor, and deep love for his family. He leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. A Celebration of Life will be held on December 16, 2024, from 3-7 PM at Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington, located at 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA, 22203.
