Maria Regina Murphy

Murphy, Maria Regina, 96, of Fall Church passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Fairfax Nursing Center. She was born November 12, 1921 to the late Michael and Regina (Schmidt) Guttenberger in Amberg, Germany and married Joseph Anthony Murphy, Captain US Army (Ret) on May 23, 1950. After moving to the Uited States, she became a citizen on May 22, 1953. Mrs. Murphy worked as a civilian Budget Analyst for the the Army Research Office and then the Army Congressional Budget Liaison Office. After retirement from the government in 1987, she worked for the Aspen Institute and later as a volunteer at the Smithsonian Resident Associates. Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Anthony Murphy, Captain US Army (Ret.). She is survived by her son, Frederick J. Murphy of Falls Church and her three brothers, Alphons, Ernest, and Adi Guttenberger of Germany. The family will receive friends from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Friday, December 8, 2017 at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington VA 22203. A memorial Mass will be held at St Anthony of Padua at a time to be announced. Mrs. Murphy will be buried, alongside her husband, at Arlington National Cemetery at a time to be determined.
