She will be deeply missed by her loving family. Devoted mother of Cathy Jane (Karl) Berger, Eileen and Nancy, She was blessed with 2 grandchildren Michael (Jenelle) and Kelly (Adam) Faber and a great grandson Clark.
Irene was born August 24, 1928 in Hazleton, PA. After high school, where she was a majorette, she attended Penn State earning a BS in Education degree in 1949. Irene was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She was a high school teacher in Bristol, PA moving to Arlington after her marriage to Fredrick in 1953. She taught math and French at the former Stratford Jr High prior to starting a family. The growing family moved to McLean in 1960 to a modern home designed by her architect husband. Irene was a substitute teacher in Fairfax County public schools and later a crossing guard at Churchill Rd Elementary for over 20 years.
Irene was a member of St John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church in McLean. She was a dedicated supporter of the former St. Colleta School for special needs children.
Irene enjoyed summer vacations at the beach. With Fredrick, she traveled to Alaska, Ireland, Germany, and other interesting destinations. She always celebrated 4th of July and Christmas with memorable family parties at her McLean home. She enjoyed musical theatre, family gatherings, and playing tennis at Langley Club.
Visitation April 3rd 2PM – 6PM Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St John the Beloved Church, April 4th, 11:00 am, with interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Park.
