We are saddened to announce the passing of Hugh Leo Gardner on Monday, October 24th. Hugh was born on March 3, 1960 in Binghamton, NY, and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. An Arlington, VA resident, he was a devout Catholic, loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a history teacher beloved by his many students. His passion for all things history was only surpassed by his devout love for his family and students.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Susan, three children, Sarah, Michael, and Matthew, their spouses, Jacob, Allison, and Sarah, and his grandchildren, Rachel, Olivia, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Gabriella.
There will be an open casket viewing on Friday, October 28th at Murphy Funeral Home (4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA) from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More (3901 Cathedral Ln, Arlington, VA) at noon on Saturday, October 29th, followed by a burial at the Columbia Gardens Cemetery (3411 Arlington, Blvd, Arlington, VA). A reception at the cemetery will immediately follow the burial.
In lieu of flowers, Hugh’s family is requesting donations be made to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (cnewa.org), a nonprofit that Hugh regularly supported.
