He was born on August 13th, 1923 in New Castle, Indiana to the late Emory and Freda Carmichael. He was proceeded in death by his wife - Christine, sister - Helen, and brothers - Marion and Jack. His surviving sister Joanne is of New Castle, Indiana.
Fred is also survived by his oldest son Fred Jr., (Margaret) of Medford, NJ, daughter Cindee (Glenn) of West Chester, PA, and youngest son Tom (Catherine) of Midlothian, VA. Grandchildren include Chris (Marc), Cathy (Mike), Carrie, Kim (Wes), Joe (Amanda), Mary Elizabeth (Taylor) and great-grandchildren include Hailey, Ashley, Freddie, Madolyn, Walker, Savannah, Colten, and Tomlin.
Fred grew up in New Castle, IN and was drafted by the Army during WWII. Under George Patton’s Third Army Company F (Acorn Division) he advanced to Communication Sergeant. He survived the Battle of the Bulge with frozen feet and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Battle Stars and the WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Army with 50% disability in 1945 and married Christine Cloud on July 15th, 1945.
Fred was a Federal Government Meat Inspector for 37 years and retired in 1979. He and his wife traveled all over the United States and Canada in an Airstream travel trailer and was the past President of the NORVA Airstream Club. Fred made friends anywhere he went and started every day with a positive outlook and willingness to help others. He loved spending time with family and friends, dancing, and was an avid golfer. Fred and 12 fellow veterans published the book Company F, a compilation of their personal war accounts and dedication to their Captain. Fred had a strong faith, he was an active member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Arlington, VA and loved spending time with his brothers of the Knights of Columbus. He was recently stricken with dementia and spent the last three years in the Holly Inn (Memory Care) at Brandermill Woods in Midlothian, Virginia. The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Brandermill Woods for providing exceptional care. He loved the staff as much as they loved him.
Celebration of Life for Frederick “Papaw” Carmichael will be held on Thursday, December 19th, 2019 at 10:30 am with a mass at St. Ann Catholic Church (5213 10th Street N, Arlington, Virginia 22205) directly followed by military burial service at Arlington National Cemetery at 12:15 at Administration Building. Celebration of life at Knights of Columbus (5115 Little Falls Road, Arlington, Virginia 22207). In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Brandermill Woods Healthcare (2100 Brandermill Parkway, Midlothian, Virginia 23112).
