Born in Oneonta, NY, in 1924, DJ grew up active in the Girl Scouts, sports, sailing and community service. DJ graduated from Ohio State University and later married her husband Bob in 1947, beginning her life as a Navy wife. DJ’s joyous and adventurous spirit was on constant display for decades as she helped navigate their three children through all Bob’s duty stations around the United States and Europe.
Upon retirement they settled in Arlington, VA. For forty years DJ was an active participant and leader in her numerous communities of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Meals on Wheels, as a Docent at the National Cathedral and, of course, with her fellow wives of the US Naval Academy Class of ’47, be it book group, bridge, or mahjong.
DJ was a wonderful grandmother to her six grandchildren and four great grandchildren, supportive of all their antics, activities, achievements, and their joint interest in playing card games.
She is survived by her oldest son, Timothy Thompson and wife Tracy; her daughter Amy Thompson Coons and husband Bill; her daughter in law, Doris Thompson; grandchildren Andrew Coons, Emily Coons Reynolds, Megan Thompson Thorne, Katy Thompson Kramer, Meredith Thompson, and Cameron Thompson; great granddaughters Margaret and Catherine Reynolds, Cecilia Jane and Elizabeth Stephen Thompson.
DJ was a loving wife, wonderful, fierce mom, and faithful friend. It was an honor to have her in our lives.
A funeral service with be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Arlington, VA on Saturday, May 4th at 12:30 pm, with a reception immediately following.
