Barbara is survived by her brother Nick (Terri) Micale of Phoenix, two sons, William Payne of Annandale, David Payne of Arlington, and a daughter, Marie (Duane) Payne Clore of Amissville. Barbara was “Granny” to Erica Payne and Jessica Payne, “Grandma” to Lilly Payne, Victoria Payne, and Gracie Payne, and “Gran” to Madeline Clore, Georgia Clore, and Willa Clore. Barbara was always excited to see her great grandsons Paxton and Easton. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Pete and Madeline Micale, husband Ted Payne, sister Madeline Jean Micale Hines, and son Brett Anthony Payne.
Barbara retired from Arlington Public Schools after 24 years working in the Student Services Department. Prior to that, in her “child care days”, she cared for young children in her home for 15 years. She loved those children, and enjoyed teaching and nurturing them while their parents worked.
Barbara was the original “Soccer Mom”, attending and cheering at every game or performance that involved her children. We are talking Bowling Leagues, Baseball, Football, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, and Rugby games, Wrestling and Swim Meets, Choir, Band, and Madrigal Concerts, Piano Recitals, School Plays, and Awards Ceremonies. She was usually in the audience or bleachers for her grandchildren’s activities as well. Barbara was a consistent PTO volunteer, Athletic Booster Club President, and was always actively involved in supporting education, sports, and extracurricular activities. She was so loved and appreciated the class of 1986 invited her to the Prom…and she went. If you went to W-L in the 70’s or 8o’s, you knew Mrs. Payne.
Barbara was a dedicated member of the Potomac Harmony Chorus for many years, where she sang bass. She enjoyed great friendships with these lovely women. Amazingly, Barbara even wore slacks, heavy make-up, and false eyelashes for performances! She also loved the theater and would see every performance possible. She worked as an usher at the Kennedy Center for over 10 years, enjoying the shows while being of service to the patrons.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the nurses, doctors, and support staff of the ICU at Virginia Hospital Center who were so very kind and compassionate toward our entire family.
Please consider supporting or donating to a local sports team, fine arts program, or other community organization in Barbara’s memory.
