Arlene Novak Coplon Doty died on July 15, 2020, surrounded in love by her children and their spouses, Dianna “Didi” and John Palien, Jay and Rebecca Coplon, and Jennifer and Roger Goldman, after a 7-month battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. Arlene is survived by her sister Saundra (Joel) Eisler; her grandchildren Leigh (Chris) Palke, JD Taylor, Michael Palien, Lucas Coplon, and Noah Coplon; as well as her five great grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Patrick, Rachael, and Jonathan Palke, daughter-in-law Jill Coplon, and her first husband Glenn Coplon; she is preceded in death by her second husband, Bob Doty. She is also survived by Arlene Permissohn and Paige Rose, both like sisters to her.
Arlene was born on February 16, 1937 in New York to Ray Milstein Novak and Sol Novak. The family moved to Norfolk, VA when she was a young girl. She met Glenn Coplon at the age of 12 and they married when Arlene was 18 years old. Along with being a wonderful homemaker and mother extraordinaire to Didi, Jay, and Jennifer, Arlene went to work as a bookkeeper, and as an employee of several businesses rose to the level of Vice President. She ultimately founded her own travel company. She was a member of several networking organizations during her career including the National Association of Legal Secretaries, where she served as President. These connections blossomed into a vast network of friends who became her extended family.
Arlene was exceptional. She was beautiful, kind, creative, talented, generous, and joyful. She loved to dance, cook, laugh, entertain, and travel. In fact, these interests led her to meet the love of her life, Bob Doty, at a church while she was traveling in Anstruther, Scotland. Her life was never the same! Bob and Arlene married in 1998 and enjoyed their life together to the fullest, dividing their time between homes in Key West, Scotland, New Hampshire, and Washington DC. Arlene’s outgoing nature and flair for life is the source of many wonderful memories, from fabulous parties (sometimes including costumes for no reason at all), making life-long friends with people she had just met in the airport, decorating and renovating multiple homes, and a constant love of the arts and the communities where she lived. She was active in the Jewish and Methodist communities where she and Bob each worshipped.
Arlene split her time in Key West and Pasadena Maryland for the next 11 years after her dear Bob passed, and lived with Didi and John, and spent her time with her family each Spring through Fall season. Arlene was a generous hostess, opening her home and heart to many people throughout the years; some came for a visit, and others actually moved in for a while. She hosted many vacations in all her homes, making friends and especially her family feel at home and welcome. All three of her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren all would tell you that they were her favorite. She had a magical ability to make everyone around her feel uniquely precious and important. We are all so lucky to have been a part of her life.
Arlene was diagnosed with brain cancer in January, and like everything she did, she hit it head on and pursued recommended treatments to beat it. She said she was going to kick cancer’s ass with a kick-ball-change tap dance move. She spent her last months at Jennifer and Roger’s home cared for by her family.
In tribute to her memory, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who are inclined make donations to either of the two organizations that supported her so well in her last year: Heartland Hospice https://www.heartlandhospice.com/Fairfax or American Brain Tumor Association https://www.abta.org .
Arlene will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date.
Virtual Shiva services will be held on Tuesday, July 21st from 1-3pm and 7-9pm; and Wednesday, July 22nd from 1-3pm and 7-9pm.
