True was born September 8, 1928, in Windsor, VT, only child to True and Ethel Putney. He served in the Navy 23 years 1945-1969. Navy buddies nicknamed him “Jim”. Part of his career he was Crew Chief and traveled with the Blue Angels. Based in Pensacola, he met beloved wife, Marilyn Henderson. Married in 1950, they had 5 children – Susan, Judy, Bruce and twins Carolyn and Kathryn. He retired in San Diego, ranked Master Chief Petty Officer E-9 in 1969.
Moving to Arlington, TX, he worked at LTV, then began teaching Aviation in the Aeronautics Cluster at Skyline HS in Dallas ISD. He retired after 25 years. A kind, loving family man, Jim raised his children in a devoted Christian home, members of Epworth UMC and Central Bible Church. He and Marilyn were married 55 years when she passed in 2005. He was an EAA member since 1963 and Past President of San Diego Chapter 14, then Past President of Chapter 34 Arlington, TX. He built/owned Stits Playboy, Thorp T-18, Piper Tri Pacer, Challenger Ultralight and now de Havilland Tiger Moth. He was active with the Texas Chapter Antique Airplane Association.
It was a blessing when he met his love, Laura Dark. Jim and Laura married in 2009. Her sons Charlie and James and families expanded their extended family. Sarge – poodle in charge – was their constant companion. God blessed each of them with a wonderful partner for their 13 years of marriage.
He was predeceased by parents True Nelson Putney II, Ethel Keene Roueche, step father Jim Roueche and wife Marilyn Lamar Putney. Jim is survived by his wife Laura Dark Putney, children Susan(Dennis) Malcolm, Judy (Travis)Crim, Bruce (Karyn) Putney, Carolyn Putney, Kathryn (Kevin) White, Charlie (Rebecca) Dark and James (Kelly) Dark. He is survived by 7 grandchildren - Matt Malcolm, Hannah Malcolm, Andrew Malcolm, Colter White, Deanna Delbridge, Sean White, Lauryn Hargrove, 21 great-grandchildren, brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and the extended family.
Services will be at Moore Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens. 1219 N. Davis St. Arlington, TX. Visitation/Reception: Wed March 8 from 6-8pm. Funeral: Thur March 9 at 11:00 am. Interment immediately following the service.
