Robert J. Allen, 84, of Arlington, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, after a prolonged illness. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2100 N. Davis Dr., Arlington, TX. A visitation service will be held on Monday, August 9, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis Dr., Arlington, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the charity of your choice in honor of Robert J. Allen.
Bob was born April 5, 1937, in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Arthur A. and Mae A. Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Edward A. Allen and his sister, Anna Mae Allen as well as two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, a daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Bob was a devoted husband and father who loved to spend time with his family. Prayer was central to his life. Until his death, he and Dorothy prayed daily for the needs of the world and for each family member. Bob instilled in his family a love of sports and passed to his children his tenacious work ethic and his gift for making the most of the resources available to him utilizing his intelligence, his personality, and the best use of his time. All who met Bob knew of his great sense of humor and his constant supply of jokes for any occasion. He will be greatly missed, especially for the joy he brought to others.
As a child he attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic School and St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary where he participated in baseball and basketball. He then attended St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, MN and later graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA in Communications and Art.
Bob was active in many charitable organizations and was instrumental in the formation of the Community Service Center and the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Green Bay, WI, the New Hope Center in Chilton, WI, and the National Catholic Community Foundation. He served as the Executive Director of the Brown County Association for Retarded Children in Green Bay, WI and the Arlington Association for Retarded Children in Arlington, TX. In 1970 President Richard Nixon appointed him to the Employment of the Handicapped Committee. Bob was a Past President of the Holy Name Society of St. John, Co-Founder and Secretary of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. John, Co-Founder and Secretary of the Green Bay Diocese Central Council St. Vincent de Paul Society, Charter Member and Vice President of the St. Jude School Board, Past President and Co-Founder of the Arlington Serra Club, and a Past President of the Wisconsin Association of Sheltered Workshop. Bob was a member of the National Association of Retarded Citizens Government Affairs Committee as well as a member of the Governor of Wisconsin Task Force: Quiet Revolution and a Past Secretary of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Green Bay.
In 1987, Bob formed what he considered his life’s mission. As a development consultant, he assisted more than 50 religious communities throughout the world, enabling them to touch many lives in service to the people of God.
Most recently, Bob formed the “Brothers of the Least Likely”, a prayer group, at his home parish. These men come together to support one another and grow in faith.
He and Dorothy were married for 61 years, He is survived by Dorothy, their children, Larry (Julie) Allen, Cathy (Richard) McCoy, Mary Kay (Barry) Swenson, Jane (Russell) Jones, and Jill (Patrick) Mach; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
The family gives special thanks to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at the Heart Place, Texas Oncology and Texas Health Resources who cared for him throughout his illness, and to Three Oaks Hospice who provided home hospice during his last weeks.
Due to the high probability of exposure to Covid-19, Active Pandemic Protocols will be enforced at both services. For those who choose to attend in person, it is required that you wear a mask and maintain a minimum of 6 feet social distance at all times. (At the funeral, the cry room is available for those unable to wear a mask. At the viewing, those unable to wear a mask are asked to arrive at 7:45p.m.)
