A service will be held on September 2nd at 2:00 pm at Moore Funeral Home located 1219 N. Davis Dr. in Arlington 76012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Mary Moore Elementary or Mission Arlington.
The daughter of William and Nelle Mosley, Mary was born September 2, 1928 in Logan, West Virginia. After completing three years of college in 1948, Mary began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse at the Y&O coal mining camp in West Virginia. Mary, her husband Guy Moore, and their two children, Guy, Jr. and Greg, moved to Texas in 1960 where Mary resumed her studies for a bachelor’s degree at Texas Wesleyan College. Upon graduating from TWC in 1962, Mary and her family moved to Arlington where she began her career with the Arlington Independent School District. Mary served as a math teacher at Nichols Junior High for eight years and then moved to the new Lamar High School where she helped develop the innovative EMH (English-Math-History) team approach to teaching. After obtaining her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 1977, Mary served as Assistant Principal at Shackelford Junior High (1979-1982) and Assistant Principal at Martin High School (1982-1985). In 1985, Mary became the first female principal of a secondary school at Bailey Junior High, and in 1986 was promoted to Director of Personnel for AISD. Mary retired from AISD in 1988 and in 1989, it was announced that the newest Arlington elementary school would be named in her honor. Mary Moore Elementary opened in August 1990.
Mary always had a special place in her heart for students and enjoyed spending time with the students of Mary Moore Elementary every chance she had. She touched many lives over her 30 years in education.
Mary and Guy enjoyed their retirement years traveling and spending time with family. Mary was loved and respected by all who knew her. She was humble, kind, and generous, and had a quick wit and sense of humor. She will be greatly missed.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 61 years Guy Moore, Sr., and her sisters Dorothy Faulkiner and Nancy Young.
She is survived by son Guy W. Moore, Jr. and wife Suzi of Arlington; son Greg Moore of San Francisco, CA; brother William “David” Mosley and wife Carol of Hamilton, MT; granddaughter Taylor Spiker and husband Sean of Fort Worth; granddaughter Hannah Moore and partner Colbbie Monroe of Fort Worth; T.J.
