Services for Laverne Walker Atwell, 81, of Colleyville will be 11:00 am Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Arlington, 301 S. Center Street, Arlington. Burial will follow in Moore Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Monday, January 4 at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Atwell went to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 31, 2015.
Laverne Walker was born November 13, 1934 in Madisonville, Texas to Pierce Stokes Walker and Lena Nancy Morgan Walker. She was the youngest of eight children, having six sisters and one brother. She started school when she was four and graduated from high school at 15. Her first job was as a typist for a credit bureau and later for Shell Oil.
She met James “Jim” Atwell in College Station at a drive-in after a Texas A&M vs. Arkansas football game. They were married March 1, 1953 and shared 47 years of marriage before his passing 2001.
Laverne was a homemaker who was very active at church and did volunteer work at the hospital. She was a former co-owner of First Years children’s shop in Bedford.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five siblings.
Survivors include two children, Pam Conley and her husband Steve, and Jeff Atwell and his wife Rebecca, four grandchildren; Brett Conley, Brittany Raschke, Matthew Atwell, and Jason Atwell, four great- grandchildren and two sisters, Icebelle Morgan and Eloise King.
Laverne’s family would like to thank her caregivers at Silver Ridge Memory Care and for the love and support of her Sunday school class.
