Jerry was born April 16, 1941, to Mable and Andrew JT Smith in Groesbeck, TX. The family moved when Jerry was in elementary school and Grand Prairie became home for him. Jerry was a graduate of Grand Prairie High School class of 1959, and it was there, he met the love his life, Joan Hall Smith. They married September 1, 1961, after Jerry completed his time in the United States Navy. Jerry secured a position with the U.S. Postal Service and served 40 years. Jerry retired from his Postmaster position in Red Oak, TX in 1998. Upon retirement Jerry continued to work doing what he loved most…talking to people. He drove a school bus for GPISD, worked as a greeter for the Texas Rangers, and he transported cars for Manheim Transportation. Jerry attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Prairie where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School, and of course manned his post as greeter. Jerry had a passion for baseball and working with the youth. He combined the two and coached recreational ball. Jerry enjoyed watching old westerns and was a happy man when the cable channel, “GRIT” was added to their package. Jerry never missed an opportunity to spend time with his family. Most of all he looked forward to spending every waking moment with his “Baby Doll”, Joan.
Jerry was survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan Hall Smith, their two daughters, Vanda Turley Watson and Gayla McCown, grandchildren Stanton Turley and Hudson Turley, Maggie McCown Pierpont, Blake McCown, Trent McCown, great grandchild Jaxson Turley, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his daughter Sedonia Sue Smith, mother, Mable Slaughter Smith, father, Andrew JT Smith, and siblings Wayne Smith, Jack Smith, and Lanell Bone.
