Francis J “Red” Kane, 93, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 29, 2016. Red was blessed with the love of two wonderful women: Marilyn, his beloved wife of 33 years and Lorna, his first wife also of 33 years who passed in 1981. He had three children: Carol, Candy, Lorne and wife, Vicki, to whom he instilled a strong sense of family, frugality (except Candy) and ability to repair anything (except Carol). Other family survivors include stepchildren: Debra, Barry and wife, Carol; grandchildren: Bradley, Lauren, Brittany; great-grandchildren: Aiden, Ariana, Ellie, Lilly and one on the way; and siblings: Jeff and Jean. Red also considered Jean-Luc Rhime from Switzerland as a special son.
Red never met a stranger, loved to tell stories and could learn everything about a person in the course of an elevator ride. He was known for his graceful dancing and ice skating, silent generosity, love of cookies and flirting with a pretty girl. Red spent his childhood growing up in Stratford, Ontario, one of twelve children. He was one of the last surviving players from the “Original Six” NHL hockey teams having signed with the Detroit Red Wings in 1943. Ever the avid athlete, Red also played professional baseball.
Upon retiring from professional sports in 1952, Red and Lorna settled in Ft. Worth and then Arlington and became U.S. citizens in 1958. Red bought a laundry business expanding to four locations. He was involved in the Jaycees and was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board in 1963. Red was on the Board for 18 years, serving as Chairman from 1976-1981. In his honor, the F.J. “Red” Kane Park in Arlington was dedicated in 1995.
Throughout his life, Red returned to his roots in Canada. Long car trips to the family cottage in Pt. Albert, and visiting with family in Toronto and Stratford were annual highlights. Walks on the beach, eating raspberry pie and Pt. Albert sunsets were always high on the agenda.
Red’s work here is done although he has left many children, step-children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to follow in his footsteps. While he was reluctant to leave his loved ones here on earth, he has left us for a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Red would hope that you would do one spontaneous, unsolicited act of kindness for someone in his name. Alternately you can donate to Meals on Wheels at www.mowaa.org/donate-tribute or to a charity of your choice.
