William Patrick Hoban, 70, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023 in Arlington Heights, IL. Bill was born February 3, 1953 in Chicago, IL. An “Irish Twin” to brother Mike and proud older brother to Mitch. He was born to a working class family, the son of a Chicago Police Officer (Michael) and doting mother (Mary Huston).
His work ethic appeared early in life when he forged his age to get a job alongside his older brother, stocking shelves at the local grocery store. His hard work and perseverance continued on the football field where his athletic abilities provided him the opportunity to attend Gordon Technical Institute in Chicago. His achievements on the field caught the attention of numerous universities, ultimately landing him at the University of Michigan. Bill’s years at Michigan, under the guidance of Bo Schembechler, saw him win a Big Ten Championship and a trip to the Orange Bowl.
While in Ann Arbor, Bill met Deborah Kern at a local pub where Deb asked him out on their first date. Bill and Deb were married on January 22, 1977 in Grosse Pointe, MI. Soon after, the pair moved to Chicago where he took on three jobs to pursue his goal of one day working at the Chicago Board of Trade. A stroke of good luck landed him on Family Feud, where the winnings helped pad the coffer in purchasing a seat at the Board of Trade. Bill went on to have a successful 30+ year career as a Commodities Trader.
Bill was a loving father to Connor, Ryan and Caily. Kind and supportive to their friends, always offering an open door to his home. His generosity with his time and resources helped to cultivate and nurture the athletic pursuits of the many kids he coached throughout their childhood.
Bill had many passions and interests, always creating a new adventure for himself. He spread his love of travel to his children at an early age, and spent his retirement traveling the world with Deb. The highlight was a solo trip to Mt. Everest Base Camp. When not traveling you could find Bill sailing, acting as an extra, playing bass guitar in a garage band, running a marathon, joining the Coast Guard Auxiliary, amongst many other endeavors. Given more time, Bill had a list of further pursuits he would have no doubt achieved.
Bill is survived by his wife; children Connor (Ria) Hoban, Ryan Hoban, Caily (Paul) O’Donovan; grandchildren Bruno, Joaquin, Bode, Annabelle, William, India, Ronan; and brother Mitch (Mary) Hoban. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael Hoban, and niece Katie Hoban.
Visitation will be held from 10am-1pm with funeral service following at 1pm on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Lauterburg-Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 East Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
