I first met Dick when I was I very young trader in 1972 at the Continental Bank in Chicago. He knew I was just beginning my career, but he treated me with such respect and at times offered me advice about the role of a trader. I spoke with Dick almost everyday and his positive attitude and his delightful sense of humor had a beneficial effect on me, and I will always remember his kind words. Dick was a true professional in every way he conducted his business. He will always be remembered as one of my favorite people that I had met in my 51 years in this industry.  God will be with you Dick.

My sincerest condolences to Jeff and the entire family.   My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

It is an honor and privilege to have known and learned from such a great man.  A life well-lived and an example for us all to aspire to be.  RIP my friend.  

Bond dude

I first met Dick as a new employee in my early 20s at William Blair.  Dick was the senior statesman there setting the tone for the sales team.  As a rookie salesman, the learning curve was steep and I needed a significant amount of guidance.  Dick was there to make sure I had it.  Dick became a mentor and roll model in short order.  He taught me the conventions and protocols of the business and, more importantly, he taught me that character and credibility, sometimes lacking, are paramount for success.  When people ask me about Dick, I describe him as a prince because that's what he was to me.

Diane and family, so sorry to hear about Dick.  Val was keeping me updated.  Our Tuesday night cycle class misses the back row of guys.  Dick always brought a smile to everyone’s face whenever I asked how everyone was doing, he always asked me how I was doing.

It was always wonderful to see Dick listening to his sports on the front porch, or interacting with everyone. Such a nice man!

Had the pleasure to remodel the first floor of his home with my friend, Gary Kaszynski. It was 4 months I will never forget, as we helped to make his home more accommodating for him.  
 Truly looked forward to seeing him every day, and our taco Thursdays.  He even liked my pea soup…   Many engaging conversations, to say the least.  
 Dick was a wonderful man, and will be missed with a heavy heart.  I have and will always think of him.

Dick was a role model to me.   I sat near or next to him for 20 years at William Blair.    Dick exemplified such a deep love for Diane and his children.   I come from a broken family so I really admired his seemingly daily conversations with one of the kids.  When Dick talked with his family, his whole persona lit up.  "Hey Pal!"  He would exclaim when one of the boys called.     Of course,  a tender, gentle Dick would greet Jennifer whenever she called.    Dick would always say, "The boys think I spoil Jennifer, I told them she is the only girl, and yes I do spoil her! "    

Particularly noteworthy in his conversations with the kids; there was a genuine friendship he had with his children.   This was foreign to my Chinese background because the family dynamic is much more hierarchical.  The parents are on top and the interaction with the kids was always as parents speaking down to their child.    I took mental note of Dick's interactions with all his family and made a promise to myself that I will emulate Dick's relationship with his kids.  Today, I greet my kids with the same... pure exuberance and ... heartfelt joy...Dick had when he talked with his family.  Today, I speak to my kids as friends.  Thank you for your role model, Dick Fox!

Secondly, Dick was a role model for being tough and tenacious.   My goodness, if there was a bond he knew was attractive, he would pound the phones... or pound on his clients :) until they too agreed, they were attractive and bought them!   However, all this was pale to the greatest testament of Dick being tough and tenacious; when he lost his eyesight. 

Last year, I had a tumor discovered on my left optic nerve.   I immediately called Dick.  In my life, there was no better role model than Dick's perseverance after the loss of his eyesight.   I told Dick, my quality of life seemed so poor.   I was at such a lifetime low point.  I struggled to continue my conversation with him, as I wept, I asked Dick if it was worth going on, unable to see?    Dick sensed my fear and lovingly recalled to me, since his blindness, all the great years of memories he had with his kids and also with the numerous, numerous grandkids and great-grandchildren!!!  I told him, I am not sure I have the strength he had to persevere through this fight.   He told me to focus on my love for my kids and wife, Dick told me...that's how he made it through the loss of his eyesight and he assured me that I will do similarly if need be.  

I am a better man because of Dick Fox in my life.    He not only impacted me but my next generation because I try to emulate him as a father!

Love and prayers of comfort to your family.   He lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren!!!

Dick, we tried to get flowers as close to the IU colors as possible!           Thank you for being such a role model to me.
