Miriam A. Lewis (née Wennekendonk) passed into eternal life on September 29, 2024, after a long illness. She was born on July 2, 1942 to Gerard and Alida "Zus" Wennekendonk in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
She immigrated to the US to start a new career as a Pan Am stewardess. In 1969, she married Richard "Dick" Lewis and made their home in Northfield, IL. They founded Richard Lewis Paper Co. and in the 80’s added multiple cash & carry locations named Lewis Paper Place.
Miriam and Dick were avid boaters and fishing enthusiasts who travelled a lot and made friends all over the country. They were long time members of The Ocean Reef and Angler’s Clubs in Key Largo, FL, Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, IL, and the Chicago Yacht Club.
Besides being a good golfer and tennis player, Miriam was a talented gardener. Her gardens were always bursting with colorful annuals, perennials, roses and large overflowing flower pots! Her impeccable taste was also evident in her creative decorating skills and floral arrangements. She had a great sense of style and found the best outfits that she accentuated with fun accessories to add a touch of whimsy!
Miriam was a gracious hostess and always happy to welcome family and friends to her homes in Northfield, Key Largo and Minocqua, WI.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dick and both her parents.
She is survived by her sisters Yvonne Jewson of Arlington Heights, IL and Lydia (John) Donohue of Woodstock, IL.
We will fondly remember her kindness, warm smile, generosity and sense of humor. We will miss her. Rest in peace “Mier”.
Interment was private.
