Eugenia “Jean” M. Ott was born on February 26,1934, in Chicago, IL to William J. and Eugenia M. (nee Martin) Schmidt and grew up on Chicago’s Northwest Side. She attended St. Robert Bellarmine Grade School, Immaculata High School, and Marquette University, where she earned a degree in Journalism. She passed away on August 29, 2023, at home comforted by her dear husband Joe.
Jean was a manager for the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, and especially enjoyed working with and mentoring young people. She was a member of St. James Parish in Arlington Heights for over 55 years, serving on the Parents’ Club Board, as editor of the parish newspaper, and in many volunteer roles.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, trying her hand at many creative pursuits, and hosting memorable holidays and celebrations. She loved to talk and made a new friend everywhere she went. Her compassion for people and animals endeared her to everyone she met, and she was a role model for how to live in service to others, especially the vulnerable, and as a champion for equity and justice. She had a particular devotion to the power of the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Jean is survived by her husband of almost 61 years Joseph J. Ott; her daughters Laureen (Mark) Cheng and Adrienne (Peter) Provost; her grandchildren Linnea Cheng and Elizabeth, Patrick and Caroline Provost; she is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many dear friends. She took great delight in her grand-doggies, Winston and Pelo.
She was the baby of her family and preceded in death by her parents, as well her brother Glenn (late Dorothe) Schmidt and her sister Audree (late William) Walsh.
The family extends deep gratitude to the wonderful caregivers who showed Jean such kindness over her last months.
