Up to the ninth grade,Ricky Harlow and I were not to be on the same team because we would always win.  We would flip a coin to see who would choose first.  It was always Phil.  Who had Phil on their team would win. He was definitely a winner and a great friend.

Phil, you were much loved, including me, your first cousin.  Thanks for guiding Catherine and me through Israel.  I've traveled much of the world,  and our trip to Israel was the best.  


Dear Kevin, Dana and Family,

I have so many fond memories of your Dad (Uncle Phil to me) and all of us spending time together as kids. He always had a smile on his face and so easy to talk with. If it wasn't for Phil, who knows, me and my sisters may not be here since Phil introduced my Dad to my Mom! Praying for you during these next weeks and may you find comfort and love from family and friends, and rejoice in his homecoming to be with the Lord and with Aunt Kathy. Much love...

God used Phil in every aspect of my life. I took notes from every sermon and listened to his teaching on Saturday morning. I soaked up every word he spoke in countless  
hours of talking and mentoring. God put it on my heart to serve the staff in our home for Christmas lunch, which ended up being an annual event.  The laughter that echoed throughout our home was joyous.  He was the “ultimate” Pastor, as Chuck said. So many Blessed memories of conferences, weekly prayer meetings in our home, the NY trip, studies on Wednesday nights at church and more. We pranked each other and laughed often, as Kathy helped me pull them off. I was blessed to babysit Andrew and Mollie when Phil and Kathy couldn’t and he always made a point to let me know when it wasn’t my turn. He taught me to chose joy and make the most of every day. I can hear him say, “Great Day,” or just give that look before he burst into laughter. I loved him but who didn’t ?  He impacted all of us. We have all been blessed to walk life with him and his family. 
God used Phil to change my life and to this day, I Praise God for him.

I always called him Preacher.

Phil loved his congregation.  He was a preacher, a teacher, a shepherd, a family man, a UNC fan, a softball player, a comedian, and a confidant.  He confessed his shortcomings, he asked for forgiveness, he competed voraciously, he pulled pranks, he told jokes, he got red-faced in an argument, he told me the truth, he loved me, he guided me, he reminded me that I belonged to the King of kings.  

He invited me to Christmas dinner when I had nowhere to go. He brought me in his home to recover from an auto accident when I had nowhere to stay.  He answered my questions about God’s Truth when I struggled with sin.  He married me to my best friend.  He loved my babies.

Preacher loved life, and he lived life with his flock, everyday. He was REAL.  And I will forever be thankful for the security and acceptance I received from him and Kathy as the very lonely and broken 
college student who almost lost her way.

Kevin & Dana & family, we are so sorry for your loss. Phil had the biggest heart & love for the people he shepherd. He was such an great teacher & friend. He loved his people well. 
You all cared for your dad with such love & devotion.
Remember meeting all of you when you moved to Apex and you were same age as my boys (Stick & Twig). I was excited about you all being here. Enjoyed so many fun times with your family.

We will always remember that Sunday morning in 1984 when Phil, Kathy, Kevin and Dana Qualls came to Apex Baptist Church. They sang a song together in front of the whole congregation. Phil was voted in as our pastor that day. Preacher Qualls was a faithful man of God, shepherd, counselor and friend. He always had that big smile and would hum or sing when he walked down the church halls. We are blessed to have had him as our pastor for 27 years! We have beautiful memories and pictures of Phil baptizing all 3 of our children in those early years.  This last December we so enjoyed visiting with him and going out to eat. We sure loved Phil Qualls and will miss him greatly!

Phil and Kathy and their children are a tribute to our Lord’s great work. Sweet memories are with our times together. God used Phil to turn our state back to the God of the Bible. Glad we will continue the fellowship in the presence of Jesus. Shannon and Zelma Scott

I remember meeting Phil when my husband and I went to Apex Baptist Church worship with my sister and her husband, Scott and Holly Ladner. What a great man of God! He impacted my thinking about Jesus. He was a great shepherd to everyone who chose to be in his space. 
What a legacy!

I knew Phil back in our younger days at East Carolina as a fellow Brother with Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was not only a Brother but a Pledge Brother which made him special in so many ways to me. I will always remember him for his infectious smile and always willing to help and give advice to me. He was much more than a fraternity brother to me. He was a friend that I will never forget. See you soon in Heaven, fly high!!!John Bernhardt IY245




Pastor Quallls was truly a shepherd for our church. Memories of him when my Daddy was dying of cancer in 1984. I was at my Mama’s house when I heard a knock on the door. Never forget him smiling the biggest smile that brought me peace, comfort and encouragement. He helped Mama and our family, how God would help us in the months ahead of us. The love of Jesus flowed through him that touched our family and all that knew him. All the fruit of the spirit operated in his life!!

So very sorry to see this news. He was loved by all of us in momeyer and we all have many wonderful memories of Phil. Prayers for your family

A true Pastor and Shepherd of the flock entrusted to his care. 
I remember standing in one of the hallway s of the church  still grieving the loss of a dear friend and sister in Christ who had passed away months earlier due to cancer. He stopped to speak words of encouragement and kindness knowing that we were like sisters…  I had been stuck in grief. It touched me in my soul . What he said helped me to eventually move out of that grief and live again.. I will always keep that memory in my heart. 

Pastor Phil was a blessing to many of us.  His seeing to the welfare of his folks through pastoral care was exceptional.  He loved the Lord and wanted everyone else to know that love too. I will always be grateful for not only his willingness to hear another viewpoint but to want to hear that other viewpoint to make sure they considered all things.  He had a great sense of humor even if a "bear" (aka Jason Gaston) came out of nowhere at him or an Upward Ceremony talent used him as a prop for his act.  May God's grace and peace be with the family as they grieve and celebrate the life and times of this wonderful man. 

He was our hero, mentor and prayer partner in Christ. I am who I am today due to his example and love for ppl. He dedicated his time and energy to anyone and everyone who needed. 
He will be missed but this is the day to rejoice in his home going to the LORD, Jesus Christ.

This guy personified what it means to be a faithful pastor. I had the privilege of calling him friend. A loss to many also to me. Well done faithful servant. 

I will never forget the trip to Israel with Phil and Kathy and my Pastor Timmy Blair as well as so many other wonderful people.  I thought a lot of him. He, being a Carolina fan, and my husband, Ronnie (went to his eternal home on March 5, 2017) a State fan. They picked on each other the entire trip. Such fond memories. Now they’re both with the Lord, as well as Kathy. God bless all of you.   Prayers for everyone as well.
