Mary Julia Karson Pelczar, was born on July 1, 1924 in Arnold, PA and lived one hundred years and one day until July 2, 2024. Mary was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She was one of six children, the daughter of Michael and Martha Karson, and a graduate of New Kensington-Arnold High School. Married in 1948, she and Andrew Frank Pelczar shared a devoted union for 48 years. They were the proud parents of five children and consistently worked hard to ensure their success.
Of strong faith, Mary was a member St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ford City, PA, where she loved to go every Friday and make pierogies. Mary worked at Alltel Telephone Company, advancing from Telephone Operator to Supervisor. Enthralled with her work, she would tell fond stories of the enlisted men and women trying to get in touch with their families while deployed. An avid beach lover, her and Andrew would save money throughout the year to take their daughters along the Atlantic coast.
Her interests spanned taking flying lessons during WWII, maintaining beautiful gardens, and poetry composition – one of her poems was published in a New York Publication entitled “Voices from the Heart.” She also enjoyed entertaining and always had a house full of people during the holidays. She cherished the Christmas holiday where she enjoyed adorning her cozy home with decorations. Lasagna, stuffed cabbages, and pierogis were some of her best culinary delights.
Mary is survived by her daughters Kathleen (Dan) Hawk, Cheryl (Daryl) Hughes, and Jeanne (Dan) Hurney, son-in-law Don Turney, grandchildren Eric (Aashi), Adam (Ruth), Steve (Tonya), Patrick, Christine (Carl), Mary, Leah (Sam), Erin (Jesse), Janna (Connor), and eleven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, three brothers, four sisters, her husband, Andrew F. Pelczar in 1996, two daughters, Karen Pelczar in 1955 and Andrea Pelczar Turney in 2019 as well as a granddaughter, Anne Turney in 2019.
