John Peter Crichton, 86, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on June 11, 2021, at home in Cary, North Carolina. John was born in Greenwich, CT to William Edward and Elizabeth Bowen Crichton. John proudly served his country in the United States Army in Military Intelligence in Panama, Republic of Panama. He had previously attended the U.S. Army Language School in Monterey, CA. John traveled the globe as the Director of International Marketing for the Power Tool Division of Rockwell International. He then joined Litton Industries as President of the Hand Tool Division, relocating the company from CT to Research Triangle Park in Raleigh, NC. He retired from Tipper Tie, Inc. in Apex, NC in 2004.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ellen Crichton of Greenwich, CT, and daughter, Susan Elizabeth Crichton Martineau (wife of Russell Martineau and mother of Cooper Crichton Martineau of Portland, Oregon) He is survived by his wife Katherine Louise Crichton of Cary, N.C.; son John P. Crichton Jr. (husband of Mary); grandchildren Andrew, Melissa and John P. Crichton III of Ocean Isle, N.C; son Matthew Alec Crichton (husband of Heather), granddaughters Elle and Teagan of Cary, N.C.; daughter Kathleen Bowen Halliwell (wife of James) and granddaughters Meagan and Caroline of West Des Moines, Iowa; daughter Melissa Anne Ostrom (wife of Robert) and grandchildren William, Charles and Mae of Cary, N.C. John is also survived by stepson John Andrew Aust (husband of Sue) and grandsons Tucker and Bailey of Boulder, CO, and stepdaughter Jennifer Lynn Stroud (wife of Robert) and grandsons Ty and Shay of Lafayette, CO.
John was an active member of St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Apex, NC. He was a Eucharistic Minister to the Homebound and taught a Fifth Grade Faith Development class with his wife Louise for eight years. John was an active member of the Cary Citizens Assisting Police organization. He loved his Country, Christmas, and most of all, his family.
John was an avid golfer throughout his life. His accomplishments included winning the 1952 Connecticut State Junior Amateur Championship and the 1952 and 1956 Innis Arden Golf Club Championship in Greenwich, CT. He represented the Canal Zone in the U.S. Army Inter Service Championship. John was a charter member of MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, N.C. where he served on the Board of Governors, including two years as President. In recent years, John played his most competitive golf at the annual Thanksgiving Crichton Cup tournament held in Pinehurst, NC.
There will be a funeral Mass at St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Apex, NC at 12:45 p.m. on June 18, 2021. The family will greet visitors beginning at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be immediately following at the St. Andrew Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duke Hospice, Office of Development, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC, 27704 or a charity of one’s choice. The family would like to express our appreciation to all the doctors, nurses and caregivers who have taken such wonderful care of John through the years, especially Dr. M. Benevides, Dr. D. Brown, and Dr. C. Eisenbeis.
