Betsy Cherry Mohr (Mama), age 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at her home in Raleigh. Born July 28, 1943 at the ‘Old’ Rex Hospital on St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh, NC; she was the middle child of the late Hugh Potts Cherry and Helen Goodwin Cherry’s three daughters. She was the granddaughter of the late Reverend Hugh and Bessie Catherine Cherry; Earl Gray and Ethel Roundy Goodwin (and Veanna Poole Goodwin- step grandmother).
Betsy spent many childhood summers at her granddaddy’s tobacco and dairy farm in Apex, NC with her sisters and cousins. She was always the life of the party.
She was a graduate of Needham B. Broughton High School where she was a majorette in the marching band. Later she attended Rex Nursing School of Raleigh to become a Registered Nurse. Upon completing nursing school she moved to New Orleans, LA to start a career at Ochsner Medical Center and then Tulane Medical School. While in New Orleans she met her prince charming, Fred, and they were married within 6 months. During their time in New Orleans they met their lifelong friends, Diana and Rick.
Betsy and Fred had two daughters which were her pride and joy. She was the nurse for the marching band while both of her girls also attended Broughton High School. During her adulthood, she enjoyed musicals with her daughters, tap dancing classes with her sisters (Jo and June) and aunt (Bessie), spoiling her niece and nephews, enjoyed a good movie, going ‘tootin’ (aka shopping) and cutting up with her sister June at the most inappropriate times. She loved her 5 precious grandchildren and enjoyed singing the ‘Hink-A-Dink’ song and reading bedtime books, she always kept her grandchildren as priority.
Her deep love of nursing continued her entire career ending with the Rex Open Heart team at the age of 67. She loved her job, her peers and the doctors and dedicated herself to her profession with pride. During retirement she and Fred spent time with friends and family traveling to Florida, New Orleans, Hilton Head and Hot Springs, Arkansas but most of all she enjoyed a quiet life at home with Fred.
Betsy is survived by her much loved husband of 57 years: Fred Mohr, of Raleigh; daughters: Laura Scanlon, of Raleigh, NC; Amy and Pete Gutowski, of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren: Seth Alexander Scanlon, Isabella Mohr Gutowski, Ryan Patrick Scanlon, Sophia Grace Gutowski and Katherine Elizabeth Mohr Scanlon of Raleigh, NC; sisters: Jo (and Robert) Brooks of Atlantic Beach, NC and June Cherry of Raleigh, NC; nieces and nephews: Bobby (and Jana) Harris of The Villages, FL, David (and Celia) Harris of Ramseur, NC, Brig (and Mary Kathryn) Harris of Greenville, SC, Hunter Hussey of Atlantic Beach, NC and McKenzie Hussey of Raleigh, NC.
