Alan was born November 20, 1925 in Boonton, NJ to the late Arthur H. Gifford and Elizabeth Edwards Gifford. He was a graduate of Mt. Lakes High School in Mt. Lakes, NJ and a WWII combat veteran of the US Navy in the Pacific Theater. Upon his honorable discharge, Alan obtained his bachelor's degree from Montclair State University, where he was the first athlete to score one thousand points in New Jersey basketball history. He was inducted into the Montclair State University Hall of Fame in 1972. Alan obtained his Masters of Education degree from Rutgers University. He had a 42 year career as an educator, administrator and coach, leading Wayne Hills High School to their first state championship in school history. Alan was known for his passion for students, athletics, his dedication to his siblings, children, and grandchildren.
Alan was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur, Ronald and Warren; and sisters, Gloria and Norma. His war veteran brothers, William Quigley and Edward Olszewski. He is survived by his son, Ronald Gifford; and daughters, Melissa Gifford and Jennifer Gifford McInnis and her husband, Lee; grandchildren, Ronald Gifford, Jr., Andrew McInnis, Laine McInnis, Maggie McInnis and Wyatt McInnis. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy of love for his family will live on forever.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Brevort, MI.
