September 24, 2018 at Regency Park Assisted Living, Gambrills, MD where she has resided for six years.
Beloved daughter of the late Margaret and Frank Schafer, she was the oldest surviving member of her family. Her siblings Leland Schafer, Oneida, NY and Clyde Schafer, Redfield, NY and Sacramento CA were laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida NY. Her late husband, Willis Arthur Sawyer Sr. predeceased her and is also buried in Glenwood Cemetery.
Surviving are daughter Christine Ann Pettingill, Naples Fl, son-in-law Richard Pettingill, Naples FL, sons Willis Arthur Sawyer Jr, NYC, NY, Tom Sawyer, North Royalton, Ohio, and Stuart Franklyn Sawyer, Eureka Springs, AR, grandchildren: Jennifer Rebecca Sawyer, North Royalton, Ohio, Kathryn Marie Richmond, TX, Stuart Jacob Franklyn Sawyer, Missouri City, TX, Lauren Marie Sawyer, North Royalton, OH, Thomas Christopher Sawyer, Broadview Hts., OH. Surviving great grandchildren include Zoe Welch, Richmond, TX and Gracyn Sawyer, Missouri City, TX. Surviving her are nieces Marcia Morgan, Oneida NY, Donna Caswell, Ormond Beach FL, and nephew Clyde “Bud” Schafer, Elk Gove, CA. Also surviving is step grandson, Paul George Pettingill, Clyde NY; step granddaughter Pamela Ann Pettingill, Clyde, NY predeceased her. Taylor Lee Pettingill and Wade Paul Pettingill, both of Southbury CT are step great grandchildren. There are numerous great nieces and nephews and their children.
Peggy grew up early in Mexico, NY and later in the Oneida, NY area, and resided in her early adulthood in Madison and Chenango Counties, NY. She married the late Willis Arthur “Lefty” Sawyer, June 5, 1946 in Elkton, MD. Together , they raised four children. Ultimately, they became involved with selling antiques and took over the Durhamville Auction House and also ran the Wampsville Trading Post. After his early death in 1978, Peggy resided full time in Florida. In late 2008, she moved to Annapolis, MD to be near her daughter.
She loved music, pets, collecting antiques and driving her RV around Florida and up and down the East Coast. She also loved interaction with people and developed loving relationships with caregivers and Seasons Hospice staff at Regency Park Assisted Living. Her family is very thankful for the care given her by staff of both organizations in her extended illness and the intense loving support given her and her family during the last most difficult five days of her life.
Funeral arrangements have been made by John M Taylor Funeral Services in Annapolis, MD. A family burial service is scheduled for October 20 at 11:00 at Glenwood Cemetery 1456 Glenwood Ave, Oneida, NY 13421. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Research Foundation d/b/a Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, a non profit committed to spending 100% of donations to research.
