Joseph Green III

Joseph Green III, 79, of Crofton MD, passed away on Monday, November 29, 2021, having spent his final days resting comfortably at home, comforted by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Anne and his sister Gerrie. He is survived by his three sons, Mark, Jeff and his wife Leona, Timm and his wife Kristin, his four grandchildren Claire, Natalie, Caroline, and Ryan, and his sister Patricia Green.

Known affectionately as “Pops”, “The Boss, “Old Man”, and “Papa” by his family, Joe was born to Joseph Green Jr. and Edithe Potts Green on September 10, 1942, in Brooklyn New York. Joe spent many of his early years in Venezuela, where his father worked for a U.S. oil company. He was a graduate of University of Delaware where he earned a bachelor’s of Science. He was also a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

He worked nearly forty years for the Hecht Company, most of that time in store planning. He was also an Army reservist, working in food services, where he learned to cook in large quantities, a skill that came in handy at holidays feeding large family gatherings.

Joe was a recovering alcoholic, having celebrated more than 38 years of sobriety at the time of his passing. He was a member of the Friday Crofton Open group, for which he served as treasurer for many years. He also volunteered regularly at the Annapolis Area Intergroup (“The Red House”) in support of his fellow alcoholics.

Joe enjoyed reading, doing the daily sudoku, watching Fox News. He was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins, and also supported his Delaware “Fighting Blue Hens” and Villanova basketball. Though he was known for saying that in retirement he had found he was “very good at doing nothing”, he nevertheless maintained a full array of activities for his AA group, frequent lunches with his friends, and time with his family. Following his retirement he organized regular luncheons for the “Ex-Hecht’s” group of friends and coworkers for over a decade. Those who knew and loved him understood that rather than being “very good at doing nothing”, he could always be counted on as a father, brother, grandfather and friend to do everything he could to help in times of need, and just to stay in touch.

A visitation for Joseph will be held Monday, December 6, 2021 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, Maryland 21401. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 11:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1800 Seton Drive, Crofton, MD 21114. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
